Not optical illusion and don't think you're nuts either. Look carefully at the vertical tailfins of all 3 pictures and you will see that the angle taken of the plane from each photograph is very different thus why the canards looks "weird".

That was actually part of the reason why it looked like the canard is flipped. The angle to the rear in image 3 is less extreme than in image 2, yet the angle of the canard in image 3 is completely reversed, when it should simply be more shallow looking, like in image 2.

I just looked it over on a J-20 model in Google sketch-up, and I realize now that it's simply a combination of lighting and angle that makes it look odd. Good catch kwaigonegin.

That's why I don't understand some people can get so hyped over an experimental model, it's still far from being anything practical, even if it'd be that'd be years away. An analogy would be it's a new-born baby and people fantasize she'd be a beauty queen / somebody great years down the line...

What China did with J-20 is smacking all the critics who says China can't make something like that can fly. But let's see if the project progress would make it on time for the 2019 parade.
