That's certainly a possibility. It's good to finally see some visible movement on this project.
A total of 24 VLS forward. One of 16 right behind the CIWS missile install, and a group of eight slightly higher behind that. Then aft, two Type 1130 CIWS and another bank of 16 VLS. And any new sensors needed.
A GREAT upgrade for the Sovs!

Jeff, .... if let's say 052D effectiveness is 100 .. how would you rate this new Sov after upgrade?
These ships are not directly comparable. The Sov carries MRSAMs for local air defense while the 052D carries LRSAMs for fleet air defense. The Sov carries 8 Moskits/YJ-12 supersonic antiship missiles as its raison d'etre while the 052D's YJ-18s play second fiddle to the HHQ-9s. A more apples to apples comparison would be the Sov vs the 051B or 052B, or the 052D vs Daring or Horizon.
Yes but i think it means now for Chinese Navy so for anti ships capacity considering on 64 cell's a 052D must be armed with about 48 SAMs, 8 - 16 AShM depends if he have 8 LACM, in addition a part of the cell's can have DK-10 and ASW missiles
But the main difference is a 052D is a AEGIS like ship much more capable fro AAW no data with China but surely can engaged simult at less 10 targets others recent classes can between 16 - 20 Sovremenyy 6 targets 1 by Front Dome radar, in addition HHQ-9 have a much more long ranhe than SA-N-12 or HQ-16 ! and can even destroy an Aircraft before he lauch a missile depnds the type ofc the 2 have mentioned are unable or only vs small missiles arming helos.
In general older ships have 1 - 6 radars capable engaged 1 - 2 targets simutl. in average about 4 AEGIS about 15 for the difference...
So the 052D is at less two times more powerful than Sovremenyy for AAW but necessary also to consider the 48 SAMs are not an unlimited stock and 052D will not occupied much not more longer the battlefield than Sovremenyy, weapons load, 052D more capale vs each attack but treat same number...
Normaly Navies " rules" are fired 2 SAMs vs 1 AShM depending on the success rate and as a precaution in fact possible surely 1.5 / 1.
For ASW same no difference betwwen 2 classes except 052D have maybe sonars a litle better.

It depends entirely on the engagement distance. If the 052D can start the engagement at maximum range against incoming targets (~200km), it can afford to wait and see what the result of the first engagements are and send a second missile only if the first one fails to hit. Against a worst-case scenario like a saturation attack with sea-skimming missiles that just pierced the radar horizon (25-30km) in the setting of no overhead AEW/C, it would almost certainly send two at a time.
