Least we forget, there are different types of services, including military service, governmental service, retail service, and then there's served in prison. So, it's entirely possible he "served" in one of them.
Interesting theory popped up. Three Somali pirates may have been left aboard OS 35 while the rest of the group fled as Chinese VBSS closed in. If they were captured, why didn't China say anything? And if not captured, where the hell are these three pirates?
The original source of it seems to be from VOA... and while I'm not going to immediately discount everything they write, in my experience VOA (along with RFA and RFE/L) to tends to allow greater degrees of speculation than other, private US news media.
So while it's possible that this Aw Koombe may have been captured, it may be possible that it's just a mix up of reporting + speculation. If he was actually captured then it's a bit curious as to why it may not have been yet stated by the Navy, though it could just be this is the first time the Chinese Navy has apprehended someone in a manner like this and are playing it safe in terms of media? I don't know.

Not agree, not all aspect and necessarily well informed i am sure i know more than 99 % of French soldiers about Chinese Army.Let's not be too presumptuous and assume that anyone who's served in the military is necessarily well informed about all aspects of military matters, nor should we assume that they are even able to approach issues in a sensible and logical manner.
And Jeff is not a military ...
As Popeye ofc they know more technicals things mainly in relation with their speciality coz they have see, learn etc... ... i served on SPG AUF1 during my military service and have see how worck but I knew long before her specifications, capacities how many etc... i learn see only some pratical things.
In addition for much military is only or mainly a job not a passion as for part of members here whose me and since very long time.
Majority of members are civils a part very passionnate more aware others less specialists less aware have less infos/datas the more aware knows almost everything don' t need to be a military or former.
