Littoral Combat Ships (LCS)

Odd, The LCS are still very new in service. I mean they first entered in 2005 give or take. the Oliver Hazard Perry class has served 30 year + by all rights the LCS ships should not hit retirement age till atleast 2030 and If you want a larger fleet you are going to want to use ships until they have hit there natural end of service life.

simply tossing them out is not a practical or economic option. It will mean restarting development of another frigate for another 5-10 years until actually floating, with another year of trials followed by technical issues that can pop up.

As for missions they were intended for Littoral patrol operations until the FF are online they will fill the frigate role after that the USN has a number of Patrol mission tasks that LCS ships would be perfect for. the best option would be to focus them into roles they are best suited to. for the Freedom class, That may mean being more forward deployed to the med and black sea and operations around the Gulf of Mexico and US outer pacific states and territories.
For independence class they has abilities that may tag them to Expeditionary groups.

And in 2 years time the FF should be starting up with the existing ships likely getting refits making both more capable.

Finally I want to point out that simply terminating an existing program rushing to retire them will leave a gap in operations capabilities. Just look at the Us Manned program right now. The Shuttle was to be retired, Constellation program was to replace it. Obama killed it, and retired the shuttle well SLS was opened and... since 2011 the US has had to buy seats on Soyuz.
These Schemes are targeting a decade out near term.
Targets and coast guard patrol and rescue ships
Technically the USCG is not part of the department of defence, it's part of the Department of Homeland security.

do you realize you've been talking for years (that's what I saw here) about what LCSs 'would be perfect for' AND AT THE SAME TIME the LCS Program has gone from bad to worse? (I think you know how many copies are "sidelined", what's the status of respective Mission Modules, etc.)?

I mean I'm a big fan of the USN, but at the same time I think it sure doesn't help if huge resources are wasted on fantasizing, 'quantum leap' and stuff which in total is to cost as much as one carrier (which by the way is officially missing) plus the air wing plus escorts which could've been kept: the next point

Do we not forget about the nuclear powered cruisers that were discarded after 10 years of use or the Virginia cruisers that were dumped early or the Spurance class EDs that were also dumped early? As the Coast Guard they would make perfect patrol vessels and actually be close to their original role and yes we most everybody knows the CG isn't officially part of the navy in peacetime

Much more fast buy an European Frigate and eventualy built under licence at less 12.

A stupid idea begin 2000's also time for Army transformation a failure ! don't need a customised ships fast for costal missions the need is not here - ofc LCS have an inferior range than Perrys - the main naval theater is in Pacific the more large ocean ! necessary FFG with a very good range and armed for important threats and not a ship for hunt the pirates !!!

But even if LCS are Frigate for size but get an armament of Corvettes still to consider can host 2 MH-60R ASW but don' t have hull sonar can have a towed in module but towed less big are less powerful
but USN need SSCs for help MSC for duties, 85 MSCs is not sufficient and even if as some says more interesting build 1 new Burke than 3 LCS same price but 1 Burke can't do duties as 3 LCS...
A big Navy in more USN must get all combattants types.

I add it is not new since long time USN don't have a true FFG Perry have MK-13 retired in 2004 13 years 11 before decomm. a stupidity !

To save cost MK-13 retired, Burke Fl IIa without Harpoons also Sub-Harpoons for SSNs, Zumwalt... and i don' t know and finaly you have combatants under armed unable for some combats missions... ! as go British.

the LCS program is ... revolutionary indeed: "And to get underway, the crew, which will be Crew 203, needs a ship and for now all the trimaran LCS-2 variant ships are either in overhaul or undergoing repairs."
