It is as Jeff said, far to early to call the F-35 a lemon
....o_O
It's to early to claim a cause. And rather Disgusting to jump out a claim of "Lemon" by critics.
To date this is only the second F35 crash ever. The safety record on this bird has been pretty good.

Aen Terran.

The Japan crash figures the least on the charts, as there was a single fighter had a flawless track record before hand.
Nearly flawless. There was a B model crash last October, and an engine fire in an A the year before.
Just for the sake of the record.
Otherwise totally agree.
Much of the abuse the F35 takes is as the program is very open the issues get reported in an echo chamber.
The Russians and Chinese don't report on their fighters unless they want propaganda points.
The US government has reported and armed critics like @Jura with their best points of attack. Which should show you how open the program is.
egregious delays, cost overruns, "interesting" sustainment
But those don't make a lemon just a procurement program that has issues.. A cost overrun doesn't knock fighters from the sky and delays are mostly the result of fixing issues or overruns. Interesting sustainment is because the system they aimed to develop was obsolete before it was ready for service and over ambitious to begin with. Again typical of military IT procurement.

You can feel that way if you wish @Jura but my point stands.
These issues are typical of Military programs. These complaints can be leveled against Stryker, FCS, Comanche, CH53K, EFV, Bradley, Abrams,Ford class, LCS, Seawolf class, Zimwalt class, Burke class, V22, America class, B2, B1, F16, F15 and more so many more. Yet only a few are actually canceled.

just one thing here:

the last time the F-35 program was in trouble: Nunn–McCurdy breach by F-35B back in 2010

the program is too big to fail, personally I'm surprised the Pentagon isn't throwing much bigger money at it

(ironically I had been reading about the F-16s to fly into the 2040s before I noticed your post; the link just to show I'm not bluffing LOL

I am well aware of that @Jura and There are reasons for that.
I'm guessing you referred to the F-16 SLEP with "that"

I'd be interested though if "that" was why the Pentagon isn't throwing much bigger money at the F-35

How did a thread on Japan Military news regarding a missing F-35 digressed to F-16 SLEP? I suggest moving some of the conversation out to the appropriate threads if you want to extend the conversation.
Regarding the missing F-35, there is just insufficient public information available to make a reasonable determination as to the cause.

Anymore off topic posts will be removed.

Anymore jumping to conclusions before any investigation and essentially trying to hijack the thread with anti-F-35 invective will be deleted.

Please, let's not use a thread, and particularly the death of a committed young man to his country, as a spring board for nocking any aircraft, or a nation, etc. before one iota of investigation has been done.

Thanks and do not respond to this moderation.
