I thought the US designation has always been one gen ahead of the Russians and the Chinese (they adopted the Russian designation). So the West has been using 4th gen for their F-15's, F-16's and F-18's for decades before any 5th gen came out... The Russians might have switched their designation to the Western one though...

China is just stating the facts, the J-20 is "their" 4th generation, the US and the Russians were both developing jet fighters some time before China began their own effort.

huh? What does ego have to do with it? Those definitions for "Fighter generations" are loose and USAF wouldn't give a sh!+ about a name unless it helps them to convince congress for funding like F-22 become F/A-22 and JSF being called F-35 instead of F-24.

Generation classification changes from "author to author" like Richard P. Hallion, Jim Winchester and so on -

Very well said. Bashing other nations and calling names is just so very immature. Western and Chinese conventions of naming generations has been discussed to death and I think anyone who brings this up again ought to be given a warning for wasting everybody's time.

You just said exactly what I did, except rephrased. Why do you think the USAF reclassifies its fighters if not for the massive ego the US congress has? I also never mentioned the USAF, I couldn't care less what they give a shit about.

I know why China classifies her fighters the way she does. And no, it's not because of what you said. It's because she groups the J-7 and J-8 as both 2nd gen when Russia (and now the US) separates them into 2nd gen and 3rd gen respectively.

The brains that designed the F-22 and B-2 are not the brains that changed the US' classification scheme to match the Russians. Unfortunately for the US, and rationality in general, it is the latter juvenile group that gets to make the final decisions. The former group is usually demonised as nerds and ridiculed as part of prevailing anti-intellectualism.

Yep, and one of the reasons one of our greatest living members will likely not be back, as he stated "US bashing is making me sick!",,,, I just consider the source, but it is uncalled for, now lets get back on topic, we've not observed any new J-20s in some time,,,,I don't believe thats completely due to the increased security around Chengdu, though that no doubt does factor in?

This particular article isn't all that credible since the journalist isn't embedded with the airforce unit but is simply giving an introduction to Chinese aircraft development. Notably, he seems to collect information from a variety of sources to achieve the required word count, with one of those sources parroting the fabricated 10:0 claim made by zhang81zhang, whose weibo account has since been permanently banned.
