This aircraft engine company is the only latest addition to the few other preexisting engine companies. One wonders what will be the aim and purpose of this new additional company? Would it be concentrating more on theoretical research rather than actually building engines?

Edit: Opps, just saw your post Deino.

this maybe a merger of many existing engine companies to make it more efficient and more powerful under one umbrella and also to serve/sell to everybody

Honestly, me too I'm surprised by this "rushed" service entry especially since today a flight-test-certification program for a modern transport usually needs at least 3-5 years, China has close to zero experiences and itself spoke of a planned flight test phase of at least 5 years. By the way we all know the usual delays for such programs (A.400M) and especially Chinese ones. As such I'm indeed surprised and almost sure that this is surely most of all a political testimony, a clear sign ... and the true test-phase for operational testing will continue for some time ...

However - and now back to the J-20 - I'm also almost sure that the PLAAF is planning for something "special" this year. First a "maybe" boring but surely most important transport ... and then maybe on August 1st the true highlight, the J-20.

As such You are indeed correct ... it is all so mysterious really !

Sorry Forbin, I really do not understand what you are trying to say other than in a very general way. I assume it is similar to what Deino said.

Are the sources reliable for this information?

If so I think there are both political and practical reasons mainly resulting from China feeling, likely twitching, under the immense military pressure the US has brought to bear on it.

Eh. I wouldn't overstate how much military pressure the US has brought to bear on China, or how much these pressures, to the degree they have effect, impact decision making over programs still in development.

Is this legit? Keep in mind that the photographer took this at CAIC.

I would write it off as fanboy drawing if it weren't for the fact that it was supposedly taken at an official place...

In which case I think it's merely a public-cleared depiction of what a J-20 carrier variant may look like that CAIC is willing to display. It probably is not directly reflective of any actual J-20 carrier variant research/development that CAIC have already done.

For all we know it could just be a magazine or newspaper clipping next to a model at a store or mall.
