New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

BYD Sales in Australia since launch (all Atto 3s):

Sept+Oct+Nov 2022: 845
December 2022: 1268
January 2023: 267
February 2023: 770

Difficult to make sense of limited data given all the launch period issues. My interpretation is that by the end of 2022 BYD Australia had cleared the initial anticipatory demand and now in 2023 we are seeing ongoing demand. Dolphin and Seal are going to join Atto 3 in BYD Australia's lineup this year too, albeit unfortunately with different names.

For comparison the latest February figures are sufficient to place Atto 3 as the second-best selling EV behind Tesla Model 3 (2671 for the month) and ahead of MG ZS EV (387).

BYD March Sales in Australia: 1061

Q1 2023 sales of Chinese brands in Australia compared to Q1 2022...

MG/SAIC (7th): 12400 up 10% YoY
GWM (12th): 8194 up 183% YoY
LDV/SAIC (15th): 5029 up 42% YoY
BYD (21st): 2098

Still waiting on MG4, Ora Good Cat and BYD Dolphin to touch down.

P.S. At the moment a lot of vehicles are being held up by port delays, specifically biosecurity contamination and cleaning. Vehicles originating from China are the biggest problem but the resulting bottleneck is affecting all brands.

The most recent Federal Government data shows 1 per cent of new cars from Japan (Australia’s largest source of motor vehicles) required decontamination on arrival at local ports, compared to 1.7 per cent of new cars from Thailand (Australia’s second-largest source of motor vehicles), and 7.3 per cent of new cars from China (Australia’s fourth-largest source of motor vehicles) [....] at least one major Chinese manufacturer, MG, last year took the extra-ordinary step of reloading cars onto a ship and sending them back to China to be treated for pests – before the same vehicles returned to Australia at a later date.

The number of new cars requiring decontamination rose by a staggering 88 per cent over the past year, from 17,700 detections in 2021 to 33,300 biosecurity risks in 2022, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald reported, citing Federal Government data.

Don't know if this was a serious question or I'm misunderstanding. It's not about speed, it's about the system. Battery swap has variety of uses:
  • Data collection on driver use habits, field wear and tear -> supports battery research, design optimization.
  • Subscription business model and easy battery upgrades.
  • More convenient for customers to recycle their batteries, also enables them to drive the same car longer.
Just off the top of my head. Design philosophy when you have dense group of users is always to centralize for efficiency. Chargers don't have to replace battery swap, or vice versa. They should coexist.
Battery swap is infinitely better when it comes to commercial vehicles, especially heavy duty trucks
I don’t think Tesla semi is on the right path, but let’s wait and see

really good video on the current trend in China's auto market. on the way to 70% NEVs. That's deadly for foreign JVs, especially Japanese ones. New emission standards coming in July. ICE car makers are desperate. Will be interesting market.

March delivery numbers for export market improved for BYD. Still need more Atto 3 and Dolphin production imo.

Champion in Israel for five straight months!!!

Huawei should just make their own car or try to cultivate a relation with one or two dedicated car companies, even if they have to finance them.

Google also only had one or two phone companies use Android when they started out.
