PLA Next Generation Main Battle Tank

Curious as to whether or not the next generation MBT will aim to replace the Type-96 and Type-99 series with a single platform?

As cost is much less of a consideration today compared to two decades ago, does it still make sense for the PLA to maintain two different weight classes of MBTs in addition to light MBTs (ZTQ-15)? Does the PLA still have a need for 40t tanks, or could the areas/terrain/missions that were previously fulfilled by the Type-96 be potentially filled by the ZTQ-15 and a single future MBT platform?

In theory.
I am not sure you could make a non penetrating turret solution due to the recoil of an MBT gun. I mean an IFV gun is one thing but an MBT gun is a beast. even the armor mass is likely to be an issue unless you leave it unarmored.

I think it might be doable. Judging by the size and depth of the turret ring on the M1, I think an unmanned turret would only require fairly shallow penetration.

Possible 4th gen tank undergoing armor protection testing. I think it is APS. I can see two white metal plates on the front hull which looks like the area for the crew hatches.

That Chinese sentence means “The first breakthrough in active jamming and active interception technology, the protection ability in all directions has been greatly improved”.
But I 'm not sure about the first sentence. It can refer to China's first breakthrough in APS (As we all know China now has GL5), or it can also mean that China has found a defense method other than soft and hard kill APS (Energyshield maybe LOL).

Probably not energy shield lol.

But more likely some increased breakthroughs in APS and soft kill/jamming methods?

Like something better than GL5 or cheaper GL5? Who knows.
