Coronavirus 2019-2020 thread (no unsubstantiated rumours!)

Well, Chinese media outlets such as Global Times and local authorities have been parroting how Omicron isn’t that bad and is flu like and how Long Covid isn’t that widespread. You might want to read this thread thoroughly because you clearly missed a lot of news. The Chinese are radically changing their stance.
GT and local governments tried to manage expectation and downplay seriousness of covid in order to prevent people from flooding the hospitals. However, it doesn't matter what they say. If millions of people died, then the government would be held accountable. If hundreds of thousands deaths, then most likely the protesters would be blamed.

Most people just don't have common sense. People got infected with covid just don't die right away. It would take one month to 6 weeks before they die. So we might have single digit deaths at the moment but the number would increase to reflect the climbing of cases. In addition, China no longer has accurate number of cases as they have ended mass testings in many cities.

People who demand a complete ending of zero covid right away are just selfish idiots that have total no regards of deaths and suffering of others. I just want to say no matter what it is a risky move for the government.

Why care about idiots? Zero covid is ending, but it won't end immediately though. It will be a gradual and most likely a messy process. Some local government will do this well, some will fail and the central gov's wrath will fall upon them

Is ending or how soon it should end is two different things. The first few months would be extremely messy and the goal is to prevent the health care system from collapsing. So it should be gradual and careful process and not doing all the relaxing all at once.

Millions will die regardless if they reopen now or later. Better to pull off the band-aid now. The government would have to expend huge amounts of political and economic capital to delay reopening, and to buy time for what?

Vaccinations?

The vaccination campaign is stalled because of widespread fear of vaccine side effects on the elderly. The reason the government doesn't force the issue is because, rightly in my opinion, they expect that when the tiny percentage of grannies die from the shot, there will be huge backlash and hell to pay. Vaccinations will only go up when families decide on their own that infection risks outweigh vaccine risks.

Phased re-opening? Medical infrastructure investment?

Too complicated and would take too long.

I can respect the government's decision. Wash their hands clean and take the brief window of opportunity given by the protesting to quickly drive through reopening. After all, it's the people's wish.

Sure, this why the central gov doesn't give clear orders on the local govs. They will let everyone do their own thing and whoever succeeds, the central gov will use that model nation-wide, who ever fails, hehe....

It doesn't matter. The government would be held accountable if millions died regardless how they try to spin the messages. As for the rest, a well coordinated and smooth reopening would keep deaths low as long as the health care system doesn't collapse.

Buy time for vaccinations and the virus to naturally attenuate. The current virus has a mortality and morbidity rate much lower than what it was when it first emerged in Wuhan. I don't think anyone would want to just rip off the band-aid sooner and open up early 2021, right? Wayyyy too many people would die. How about summer this year? Fewer people. Now? Fewer than that. Another year? Probably even fewer than that. But how much fewer? You can't hold China back another year to save 18 really old and sick people and you can't wrecklessly pull off the band-aid sooner than later to get 10K deaths a week. So finding the right time to open up is finding the right balance between getting too many serious cases/deaths vs getting the economy to fire up more of its potential for global competition.

I don't expect COVID to attenuate much more than omicron.

Millennia after it began, smallpox killed hundreds of millions in the 20th century. For centuries after the Black Death, the plague repeatedly came back to Europe every generation, killing millions each time. HIV still has a 100% untreated death rate after more than half a century.
