Ramping up China nuclear scary stories to force China into nuclear arms deal?
"for the first time Friday"
>It would allow China to target the continental US “from a protected bastion within the South China Sea,” US Strategic Command Commander Admiral Charles Richard told the Senate Armed Services Committee back in March.

...refuting their own title in the article...

What's up with western media writing on nuke stuff always being so amateurish and cringe? Whether WSJ, NYT, FT, etc.

Anyway, still seems likely it's just the JL-2A, not the actual JL-3? (Analogous to DF-31 -> 31A, cpl thousand km range extension but not 41). Another Admiral parroting it probably doesn't mean much.

And why you think it is likely JL-2A? "We keep close track of those submarines" the Adm says. He should know what is inside the launch tubes

I read through the article. Doesn't seem like there is any contradiction in there. This is what the admiral said. Do you expect them to report it differently?

He was pretty specific in there about what they have and on how many submarines. It's more likely than not that they are right. I still remember 10 years ago when they would do these interviews and say the submarines are not on patrol. At worst, he got the designation wrong. Why does that matter? The main point here is they have icbm that can reach continental USA from their own waters and are adding more subs.

I think they get the designation wrong, this very "JL-3" is probably an upgraded version of JL-2, with aerospike, more advanced carbon fiber.

Why do they make it a such a big deal, I mean it can carry 3 x 150kt-200kt warheads and that's it. Perhaps sending a signal that US can track loading process with their keyhole satellite? But the missile comes with canister and JL-2A didn't change that much in diameter or length, how do they tell whether it is JL-2 or JL-2A.

It is not a secret that PLAN didn't satisfy with JL-2 when 094 appeared unloaded and undeployed in CCTV report, and they were waiting for SLBM to reach CONUS and finally got them in tubes. US intelligence could just see the rapid deployment of JL-2A and determine it is "JL-3" instead of old JL-2.

Even with 10,000+ km range, it can barely reach CONUS from SCS
