One last thing: I don't expect the PLA to shoot at Pelosi without clear prior warning. They would first declare the airspace above Taiwan closed for all US planes, or something to that extent. This would give the US no excuse that they didn't know what they were getting into.

Since no explicit warning has been given I think it's likely that Pelosi will be landing in Taiwan.

I understand that, but the difference between having a state dinner & putting on a tricolor hat vs. war seems rather drastic if the only difference is the political party of the official visiting. There seems to be some misunderstanding that the President doesn't control the Speaker of the House. He has more control over a member of the Executive Branch who is a Republican than a member of Congress who is a fellow Democrat.

Also, government visits don't set state policy. Just because some US politician visits somewhere, even the President, doesn't mean the US recognizes that area as independent or anything.
Sure buddy. You guys are up-in-arms when the Chinese went to the island of Solomon with severe indignation and even issuance of threat to that sovereign country and that's thousands away from the land of the free U.S.A.

It seems you folks, are great at obfuscation and creating confusion to the facts on the ground, and as to why the Pelosi visit is threading on China's bottom line. If such a visit was nothing burger then why is it that only 1 House speakers have managed to have done so (while the other one remains to be seen ) and wasn't conducted on a regular visit if such a visits was meant nothing other than what exactly?

You can't be seriously this be obtuse now are we?

Can someone explain to me why this is considered to be such a big issue when Newt Gingrich visited Taiwan in 1997 and it wasn't considered by the PRC to be some huge affront? Not only did Gingrich went, but he brought a huge entourage with a dozen members of Congress. I remember in late that year Jiang Zemin actually visited the US, had a state dinner with Bill Clinton, and put on a tricolor hat. The only thing is that Pelosi is in the same party as Biden whereas Gingrich was a Republican, but in terms of official US titles they were both Speaker of the House, and Gingrich was as much a member of the US government and in line for succession as Pelosi is.
Newt Gringrich went to Beijing with his group first. Had a meeting before he went to Taiwan. Also Gringrich is a republican which is not the one in the white house. Pelosi is from the same party as the one in the white house.
Also the situation is different. Lee Teng-hui is different from current Taiwan leader, at least in 1997. When Gringrich land in Taiwan, went to presidential residence, Lee pointed at picture of Dr. Sun on the wall, and said Republic of China is founded by Dr. Sun, it is a sovereign country in it's own right, does not need to declare independence, since it's always been an independent country. Unlike the current government in Taiwan. Lee didn't advance "two country" theory until 1999.
