Well, well, well, would you look at that. I can't wait to see the commentary from the know-it-alls who keep telling us China will never have EUV.
I don't know if they are going to have it, but damn if they are working to have it.
But I think they should double their efforts and create a venture company apart from SMEE to deal with the research, development and commercialization of EUV lithography inside China, take advantage that they don't have to compete with ASML in this area.

How close are they to a production model in terms of time?

Who knows, i just think the government, research institutions, semiconductor venture funds, fabs and semiconductor companies, should take advantage of the void created by the ASML ban in EUV and foster the commercialization EUV technology in China before ASML is allowed to ship theirs. which i think is not going to be anytime soon. That could accelerate the development of EUV in China.

Three years.
I think three years for the first "low volume" prototypes could be better approach. If ASML is not going to compete in China in that area and if they put an good effort towards the commercialization of this technology they could have it sooner than some people expect. In my personal opinion. CAS already got validated a some EUV technologies in 2017, not even close to production ready but they have some hardware, they are not starting from zero.

But it should be noted that ASML could lobby to be allowed to sell low NA EUV machines to China as soon as they start shipping high NA tools because they might argue that low NA is mature technology and that compared to Low NA, high NA EUV is such a massive technological leap that Chinese factories will continue to be at a disadvantage compared to the rest of the world that can churn out 7-5nm chips like candy due to the much lower resolution of high NA EUV between 8-6 nm and much higher projected throughput like 200 WPH compared to 14 nm for low NA and 120 WPH. If ASML is allowed to ship its tools, Chinese factories will inevitably want to buy them.

I don't think anyone doubt China could come up with an EUV scanner. But people doubt the unreasonable claim that this type of system could be had in a few year.
It amazes me that after all China's done, all it's accomplished, all the countless times it's proved its skeptics and doubters wrong, there's still anyone on the face of the Earth stupid enough to bet against it.
