More of a GPMG the way it’s configured and weighing. Don’t get me wrong Fn Minimi and MG4 have the same weight issues.
Not really, type-67, despite being a terrible weapon, has a significantly much bigger production , Type-88 is way rarer than you would think, there are no more than 1000 in service , actually,some soldiers never have never seen them

There’s a belt fed LMG called type-88 LMG , which is hated even more
I'm sure they could have gotten their hands on a PKM and made a 5.8 version of it it they needed. Seems to be a different philosophy like we can't afford all squads using ammo with belt fed. China has guerrilla roots and like light logistic signature.

nope the PKM needs a rimmed cartridge to work and all attempt to make it work with rimless have resulted into heavy, unreliable and oversized abominations of the possible world's best gpmg (just ask the polish).

I thought the problem was the links and not the rim. Also the polish tried to modify existing guns instead of a clean design.

nope, do you see that claw on top of the bolt carrier?
it goes over the rim of the cartridge when the bolt is pushed forward, when the bolt is pushed backwards it pulls the cartridge out of the link and drops it in front of the bolthead.

This is the main reason why its so hard to make a better gpmg than a pkm, belt fed using rimless usually load when the bolt goes forward.
The backwards motion is more reliable as it is produced by the gas blowback on the piston whereas using the forward motion is fully reliant on the spring.

Most rimless cartridge have a extractor that does the same thing of pulling a cartridge back. I would even argue that this is easier as a fired cartridge can expand and get stuck while this should be smooth.
