What is surprising to me is that they went from few hundred to more then thousand in a very short time.
I say the work is being distributed between multiple companies and is not an SMEE effort alone. Is a nation wide, multi company effort, include companies, research institutions and business funds in China.
For this kind of complex projects the best strategy is to Divide and Conquer, that is why you have EUV lithography, is impossible for SMEE to manage a project of this nature alone. Athougth they did try in 2011 with their 193nm dry scanner with not that bad results for nice military applications, 110-90nm 50wph, a dream machine for the Chinese military, who knows how many beautiful chips where patterned by this machine, that now power Chinese jets, missiles and drones.
They did the Arf laser, the optics, the software and the working stage mostly by themselves, that was way before the creation of RSlaser, Guowang Optical, U-precision and others.​
maybe this sudden internal revolution in SMEE is one of the reason why the old and very respected boss Rongming He left the company in 2018,
Probably disagreements about the direction of the company, i can only speculate that before the sanctions in 2016 the he wanted to shift their R&D focus from frontend scanners to more profitable areas for them like packaging, FPD, MEMS, laser machines and non critical layers, they even reach an agreement with ASML in 2017 to collaborate in that area. I dont think ASML would help SMEE make high end lithography machines. I speculating that some people may have a disagreement with that. Either way the sanctions derailed all that.

If China has 2 companies developing and building lithography machines, all the better. It is not that SMEE can ramp up fast enough to satisfy China's internal need for the next 10~20 years. And consider the potential export market.

Yes, I agree. I was talking about framing it as "China has made a major breakthrough" there when it was done by SMEE already.

There is not two companies making this kind of lithography systems (immersion lithography). there are systems and sub-systems companies, that company (Zhejiang Cheer Mechanical or cheertech) is a sub-system provider, they where created from Zhejiang university, they specialize in ultra-pure water and temperature control for semiconductor applications, one those applications is immersion lithography, they are the ones making the immersion sub-systems for the immersion lithography project.

There are other companies providing other kind of lithography systems in China like:

Direct writing laser lithography: CFMEE.
NanoImprint lithography: GermanLitho
Direct imaging lithography: mikoptik
e-beam lithography = KYKY Vacuum (in development but patented)
Automatic mask aligners: CETC
steppers: CETC

But all the sub-systems of this immersion project I think are being integrated by SMEE.

That's all very well and good, but what is up with these names? "Cheer Mechanical" and "GermanLitho"? I've gained a new appreciation for the blandness of SOE names - you can't go wrong with "China Electronics Technology Corporation." Apparently, when these people have the creative freedom to pick their brand names the results leave a lot to be desired.

Yeah, why the heck a Chinese company is called "GERMANLitho", lmao.

Maybe is a problem with the romanization of Chinese characters, that don't create appealing names in English, I think GermanLitho Chinese name is 青岛天人微纳科技 which translate to "Qingdao Tenren Micro-Nano technology", i don't know what Tenren translate to.
