To be more precise, it looks like a series of quad loop with nested circular loop antenna while the previous design used Yagi elements. There are papers that discuss the advantages of quad loops over yagis but its out of topic. We can merely say it performs better than its predecessor for what its intended for.

Nice, we can see both the linear towed array sonar (tube with the orange bands) and the variable depth sonar (thicker cream coloured rectangular-ish tube), which we've seen before from a different perspective.

Would it be an "overkill" to send 052DL for just the Gulf mission? perhaps has other objectives ... my guess is to make the sailors more experience and to test many new systems on 052DL? .. maybe

Besides the TAS and the VDS, there's a third port and line that's almost never talked about and thats for a towed torpedo decoy.
