I was thinking initially they could possibly for different roles (one advanced trainer and one for light fighter/attack, which of course would be a pretty unwieldy but, if they have money to throw around then its their prerogative) but the lack domestic engines could be an even bigger issue.

Until they actually sign the deal, I think there is always chance of them picking something else. Could also be negotiation tactic for china to offer them something else.

That could definitely be a possibility, it certainly wouldn't be the first agreed upon aircraft deal that was cancelled last minute.

', and not having to rely on a single foreign country for defence equipment. An East Asian country would certainly diversify things (although the T-50 is heavily reliant on American equipment and would be subject to the same potential danger to boycotts as any American built plane).

By the way - latest on Uruguay A-37 replacement is that the L-15 (unknown variant/configuration) the Leonardo 346 are still in the running and the Uruguayan Air Force sent a delegation to Chechia to see the L-39NG and L-159 up close.
