So Iceman is an Admiral.:) Yes Russia is the current "bady" in Hollywood and China is the other current "bady" for MSM.
Actually Russia or Russians in general have been baddies for a long time, much longer than just current. Unless you mean current as in the upcoming top gun sequel. Russians in Hollywood are predominantly cast as bad guys like gangsters, illegal arms dealers, corrupted oligarchs, evil killers, well basically criminals, and their woman as prostitutes, mistresses etc...As for the former Soviet union well, rocky 4 and eighties military movies kinda give you a picture.

Imo, Part of it is geopolitics, and the fact Russian market doesn't have the sway of the enormous Chinese market. I dun know who got the worse treatment by Hollywood between them and brown people though. It's a toss up. And dun get me started on Hollywood's love of heroic white savior movies ala the last samurai.

What Hollywood has practiced is Tokenism. It’s not “White Supremacy”, that term has lost all meaning in modern culture. Used as a dog whistle for “Speach we don’t like”. Farther these days Asian Americans are often being painted as “White”.
Hollywood loves to talk art and free speech but is the first to stereotype if you break from their views.
Especially if a member of a minority identity.

China or any country will block imports of films they don’t like. The Hollywood corporate though tries to cater to China even when it should be blatantly obvious that the product will never get there. I mean the reshoots of The Red Dawn reboot? Seriously.
Farther thing is the Corporate side of Hollywood isn’t making that much from distribution in China. Remember Chinese studios are putting out their own censor approved blockbuster movies. Which has farther reduced the number of spots for imports. American movies that were imported had to go through tight import controls with the Chinese distribution eating up the lions share. Films like Milan might have sold 20 years ago but today?
So the pandering and Tokenisum falls on
Farther Top Gun will probably never enter the Chinese market. Top gun is pretty much “American propaganda” and the CCP is in a banner year with Red cliffs. Do as I say not as I do. CCP can criticize the US as much as it likes, but flip the script…
Let me know when The Battle of Lake Changjin gets into America's movie theatres whenever it first release without any excuses. We know how America cries about China not letting their products into the Chinese market and Huawei and ZTE got blocked out of fake security concerns into the American market.

Asian American's are NOT white, that's just conservatives trying to recruit another group into being a part of their "white supremacy" side to go against the other minorities. Hollywood needs China for a bigger profit margarine than the standard domestic market. The American propaganda depends on their MSM corporate oligarchs to criticize China, because a fair view on China would mean the end of the status quo for American politics.

This movie and also its sequel were available in some AMC's in the US. Not sure about first release and delays between releases. AMC is majority-owned by a Chinese company.

I like the lead female Russian character "From Russia with Love". I'll let her seduce me any time. I guess Trump and Prince Andrew would have liked that as well.

Actually Italian actress Daniella Bianchi, but her accent was so strong her voice was dubbed.

China usually gets a pass as if you were a producer and went to the studios with a script that cast the PLA as a villain, the studios would toss you onto the streets due to the fact that it would prevent said production from having any chance of marketing in Mainland China. Many movies have tried to bend over backwards to sell to China. The Transformers movies for example. Even the Jacket sported by Maverick in this movie has been altered to remove a patch that displays the ROC flag. Startrek Discovery and Picard have gone as far as to name drop two ships with distinctly Chinese names.
Hollywood would rather make a US general a villain than any PLA Officer with possibly two exception Tomorrow Never Dies and Lethal Weapon 4. But only as corrupt tools used by shady characters to line their own pockets.

Russia has been Hollywood’s favorite kicking stone for decades. But it let up some in the 1990s where before that it was open post that it was always a rogue junta of Ultranationalist generals.
TND had Michelle Yeoh as a Chinese agent who helped Bond beat the baddies.

It's called capitalism at work. If US/Western history was portrayed truthfully in Hollywood, it would be a NC-17 horror movie. The reason they don't portray it like that, it's because Americans will not go watch it. Hollywood wants to make money in China so naturally they aren't going to portray something that will make Chinese not go watch it. The complaints of Chinese influence... do we see Hollywood being forced to change plotlines to make it where all the Chinese are good guys while all Americans are bad? No. It's not happening. Hollywood isn't going to spend the money to make such a movie just because of Chinese influence. Do we see Hollywood spending the money for movies just for Chinese audiences where a simple $10 million dollars it cost makes hundreds of millions at the box office. They don't even do that. They have to have their white protagonists in their movies taking the lead. They can hire people in China to make the movies that they know Chinese want to see but they don't. They just want to complain about how Maverick's bomber jacket was changed or how a bit role for a Chinese actor was added to an all-white movie to ring the alarm bells of Chinese control of Hollywood.

There's a story of how a US laundry detergent company wanted to sell its detergent in Japan after WWII. They would make ads with the face of a blonde white lady on them selling their product. Japanese weren't buying the detergent. The company then went through all these different ad campaigns to no avail when someone somehow then got the idea to use a Japanese woman on the ads but they had her wear a blonde wig. It still didn't work when then they just used a Japanese women with no Westernization and then their detergent finally started to sell in Japan. The Republicans would complain that's Japanese racism...

I guess they dropped the whole age-of-the-drone adversary plot that was talked about before filming. If it's still in there, it must be a minor part now. The only foreign country that had F-14s was Iran but then Hollywood can make up anything they want.
