I find the visual map differences from the western military analysts and the Russian media side peculiar to say the least. PR at play?
We should note that given the state of the weather/fields(mud), the actual control area is somewhere between the maps provided SW and the quoted map source
Lets not forget that the practical control area, most probably means captured villages, roads, and 100m/LOS for each side of the road
The West, underestimates the control area Russia overestimates the control area. The truth is somewhere in between.
Honestly, it depends on how many troops they have in the country to establish solid control for this huge land. You cannot expect with so few troops to establish effective control of all these places.
This is also why there so many reports about ambushes behind Russian lines. Air assets for ISR are really needed here for Russia
