A sixth generation fighter aircraft design under study by 611.

Now, where have I seen that planform before...

And I would almost be bold enough to say the depicted design in that paper may be derived from this particular studied planform given the angles of leading and trailing edges as well as geometry of forward cockpit/fuselage area.

In any case, it's clearly a tailless high speed flying wing design.
But I also doubt it would be a confirmed or serious proposal for the first 6th generation fighter that we expect, as that aircraft will very likely be heavy, twin engine.
This one appears medium-heavy and of course is single engine.
Based on the title of the paper, it is more investigating the planform than anything.

I suspect the details of the internals of the aircraft are more for generic representational purposes.

Henri K posted the full image of it, and it is from 611 Chengdu.

And based on additional details on the right side of the image showing the control surfaces, I think it is indeed the same planform investigated in the pictures I posted above.

Note the elevons, spoiler slot deflectors, and all moving wingtips, which were also seen in various forms in those images.

Was there something like this for the J-20 before it was unveiled? As in, how did the academics in their research papers(if any) depict their 5th gen J-20 design before its appearance is confirmed?

After going through this thread, it is clear that 6th gen fighters are yet to be properly conceptualized, since everybody is offering what they think should be the defining characteristic, here is mine; next generation engines, preferably though not necessarily variable cycle engines that give greater kinematic performance and of course advanced control surfaces that rely more on FCS.

WOuld be a supercruising, stealth with a long loitering capability with his variable cycle engines. Heavy ecm loaded fighter capable of leading ucav/loyal wingman to combat. Most payload will be on the ucav while the fighter will bring BVR AA and electronic attack capabilities.

I actually don't see any defining characteristics that make a fighter 6th generation.
It just appears to be more of the same.

The F-35 is supposed to be getting 6th gen engines in 5 years time.

It’s always the first player who defines new gen standards,we have to wait till NGAD become a thing

But with 5th gen -> 6th gen, it feels more like the difference between 4th gen -> 4.5 gen aircraft.

Just more of the same, but somewhat better.
I'll echo this.

Much of what is proposed for sixth gen is already available on fifth gens (LO, AI, CEC, algorithms, powerful and efficient engines, sensor fusion, automation, conformal sensors).

Much of this has been widely discussed for well over a decade now, nothing groundbreaking.

IMHO, one of the next big changes will be true unmanned air to air combat since that's been a bitch to automate, unlike air to surface.
