The full sized helipad represents a massive investment of the already limited available real estate on the 056. You don’t make that sort of investment for only ‘just in case’ contingency scenarios, and if you did, you would not put such a huge helipad on such a small ship. Just look at how small the helipads can be on other corvettes and private yachts to give an idea of how much bigger than bare minimum the 056’s helipad is.

The only justification for having such a huge helipad on such a small ship is if they intend to use it to accommodate a wide range of helicopters, and also to give themselves room to perform critical support functions like refuelling and re-arming.

I've pointed out that my guesstimate is $100M for a Type-056
Adding a bit more hull for a larger helicopter pad comes at marginal cost, because it's mainly steel plus some labour

There was a Type-054A cost estimate from the Diplomat some years back.
That much larger hull and propulsion is only $77M, plus labour

I feel there's no need for the Type-056 to provide helicopter fueling and rearming, given the short distances to the Chinese mainland and the availability of other ships which can refuel and rearm helicopters

PLA trolling ROCAF?

There was talk earlier in this thread that there may have actually been less aircraft during those large scale exercises across the strait in October.

"The number of aircraft sorties is higher, not lower, than the figure the DPP authorities hyped," Tan revealed.

The goal is very clear: to counter the vile acts of frequent collusions between secessionist and foreign forces to challenge the one-China principle with resolute actions, firmly safeguard national sovereignty and territorial safety, and safeguard the common well-being of compatriots from both sides of the Straits and peace and stability in the region, Tan pointed out.

Fu Qianshao, a Chinese mainland military aviation expert, told the Global Times on Thursday that the reason why Taiwan defense authorities reported less PLA warplanes than the real figure could be the lack of technical capabilities to detect them.

It is possible that the radars used by Taiwan's armed forces could not recognize aircraft clearly, Fu said. "If two aircraft fly closely together, they might have counted them as one."

Not sure if yet another political motivated fearmongering report or indeed an option?

Here's a good entertaining video about the scenario simulation goes on in the SCS. It's pretty good and keep in mind that this video was done last year with the available information on PLAAF and PLAN weapons systems. So take it with a grain of salt and enjoy. I thinks it's a good education video for starters and long time China military watchers to get a good grip of the cost of war or conflict can be.

I remember this video was posted not too long ago. I think there were many things in this video that were called out by some of our members here because it was inaccurate.

It seems that they have seriously nerfed the PL-15. In all these BVR engagements the Chinese basically spammed the PL-15 which had disappointing results while the Americans did the same but somehow their missiles scored much more hits.....

Seems like the usual trope of Chinese weapons being all about quantity without quality

they literally made it so that Chinese missiles can't hit anything except the DF-21, and they still lost. if they made it even somewhat accurate, it wouldn't be an interesting battle, it'd just be "oh shit we lost everything while inflicting 0 losses"
