Haplogroups such as O-M176 touches Japanese, Koreans including North Koreans and Manchurians to a significant degree. But Han population does not receive much exposure to it.

The difference is minute. But it's still observable, like the physical difference between Cristiano Ronaldo and Pierce Brosnan.

There is absolutely no way Ronaldo gets mistaken as an Irishman. There is no way Pierce Brosnan gets mistaken as a Spaniard or Portuguese.

Similarly, no one would look at Vladimir Putin and say he has the physical features of a Frenchman.

This is the haplogroup distribution for Europe.

I'm from HK Canto, ethnic Han.

When I'm skinny during military time, my HK friends say I look Vietnamese.

When I am fat during undergrad, my HK friends say I look Korean.

Thai people think I look Thai, Korean people think I look Korean/Japanese/

Honestly, depending on your haircut and weight (BMI), you can look like different East Asian ethnicity.
Hey bud, nice to see you back around here.

On this point, historical enemies of China have all without fail either:
  • assimilated by China, adding their cultural and genetic diversity to what's considered "Chinese"
  • or for the lack of a better word: gone
The Manchus were the ruling class of China not even 200 years ago, and now their language is dead and they are all but unrecognisable apart from any regular han chinese.

Looking further back you have Khitan (hilariously the name Russians still use to refer to China, hence Su-30 MKK), Xiongnu, Xianbei, Jie and more, all of them have disappeared in the river of time with some help from the powers from Central Plain. One wonders should this pattern hold, where would countries like the US or Japan be in 500 years time.
The Germanic barbarians with the Anglo Saxons being the most backward and barbaric of them all, after they descended upon the civilized world, enslaved:
- the Slavic people (root of the English word slave is Slav for that reason)
- the Celtics people (the potato famine was an act of deliberate starvation by the WASPs)
- the Native (real) Americans, there were at least tens of millions them before the colonization. This remains the largest genocide in the history of humanity
- the African people, tens of millions have been killed, tortured and worked to death at least through out the centuries
- the South Asians, indiscriminate killing and starving of millions
And we haven't even touched on the two world wars with over 100 million death and the subsequent economic exploitations that last till now.
I maintain that history will remember these Germanic barbarians and Anglo Saxons in particular as a far more brutal Mongolian with a fitting end coming in sight.

I wonder the extent to which Central Asian elites are beholden to China because of natural gas and trade connections
That's how economic influence works. And gradually Chinese soft power influence is growing there. The people from these countries visit China, and they see with their own eyes that China is the future.

So it is quite logical that the whole Central Asia is turning towards China. Russia will have to work harder if it wants to keep them close to its orbit

This means that it has to focus less on cultural influence, and more on economic benefits

I think the nuance is that Central Asian is closer to china economically, but closer to Russia militarily. Either way, nothing wrong with central asia hedging its best. As a chinese, we should not be attempting to displace Russia in its rightful sphere of influence.
