It's a genius move by China, really. You've got Morrison taking a piss at China by "inviting" Xi for talks after announcing AUKUS; and on the other side of the equator there's Japan's sabre-rattling on Taiwan and holding large drills for "Chinese invasion".

Now China responds by applying to join CPTPP, effectively putting both countries on the spot for the whole world to see - the ball's on their court if they wanna accept China's membership or veto it, and everybody will know where they stand.
China has been planning to apply for CPTPP long ago, not in response to any of these Japan or Aussie actions.

If Vietnam and Singapore can pass with their SOEs, China shouldn't have any problems.

China has been planning to apply for CPTPP long ago, not in response to any of these Japan or Aussie actions.

Indeed, and they picked the day right after the AUKUS announcement, of all days, to submit their application.
Now we shall see who is on China's side and who will remain as compradors to white anglo supremacy.

I'll told you so deep inside the Indonesian know that the target is them not China, cause for them proximity counts and the Australians are intruders and don't share our Asian value. So @supersnoop is right we are being hysterical , instead of forming an alliance of the willing it had created the opposite with major consequence for the Americans. It solidify the Chinese in the SCS with Japan on the back foot as the only Asian that sided with the foreigners (so called western values).

Australia’s plan to arm itself with a fleet of nuclear-propelled submarines to combat the rising threat of China has been met with alarm by near neighbour Indonesia.

South-east Asia’s largest country has expressed unease about Australia’s dramatic enhancing of its military, notably its intention to use US technology to build eight nuclear-powered submarines as part of the new three-way defence alliance with Washington DC and London.

In a statement issued on Friday, Indonesia foreign affairs spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said Jakarta had taken note of Australia’s decision to acquire nuclear-powered submarines and stressed “Indonesia is deeply concerned over the continuing arms race and power projection in the region”.

“Indonesia stresses the importance of Australia’s commitment to continue meeting all of its nuclear non-proliferation obligations,” the statement said.

“Indonesia calls on Australia to maintain its commitment towards regional peace, stability and security in accordance with the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation [the code of conduct between the Association of South-east Asian Nations].

“Indonesia encourages Australia and other parties concerned to advance dialogue in settling any differences peacefully. In this regard, Indonesia underscores the respect for international law, including UNCLOS 1982 [United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea], in maintaining peace and security in the region.”

There is no doubt that indonesia will be dragged into an arms race with australia, they are next door after all
The results of this will be australia being isolated by ASEAN countries, australia is working extra hard to make their own nightmare comes true
