China-Europe freight train volume is growing tremendously, exceeding expectation.

Eurasian world island is starting to take shape. Once Africa is also linked through Egypt the American continent will be isolated and pushed back to being the peripherals of the known world.

Whilst significant, remember this train freight is only a fraction of what is carried by boat.

You can run the numbers yourself.

Freight train isn’t really an alternative for air or sea freight, but rather opens up additional capacity and a brand new middle ground between them for none, or slow perishable goods that needs to be delivered faster than sea, but not at the expense of air.

This is also only just the first step. In the future, as the route and surrounding areas develop, and technology advances, there is also the possibility that HSR and maglev might also be added, either as a parallel express/passenger service, or as a full on replacement eventually. Then you will see rail seriously starting to challenge air travel.

Of course

The distances involved mean passenger service is a non-starter.

You're still talking about a week+ on a train from Europe to Asia

Still too many fools like this in the world.
Him being passed over for promotion and the ultra competitiveness along with favoritism are what led to him still being bitter about his native country. Personal ambitions and seeking for personal glory are what's causing this prominent research scientist to seek out and work for a country that seeks to dent/stunt his country's rise. And that's very unfortunate for China because it goes to show that personal ambitions, seeker of fame and fortune will be used by vainglorious Chinese like Chen into betraying their country regardless of outcome.

I really don't think that's an acceptable excuse but; plenty of other talented Chinese scientists got passed over for promotion amidst favouritism and ultracomeptitive environments yet they still didn't turn traitor and run to the anglos- or look to the returning Sea Turtles who returned to China to contribute to China's development.

No, it's a deficiency of character, and sadly the sci/medical sector has no shortage of such shallow petty people; having worked in research in the US in the past i can attest that the egos of research scientists and the pettiness from years of being bullied in high school translates to some extremely toxic environments in the research and medical science world.
