2 trillion dollars, and 20 years later, we are back to where we started. Taliban has the capital and the entire country as the Afghan government just melted away.

The war is over.

Just a few weeks ago, Biden said the chance of Taliban take over is highly unlikely since the US trained afghan troops, 300,000 strong, will protect major cities and push for an negotiated peace deal with the Talibans. He said we will never see images of US helicopters evacuating embassy personnels. Yet that's exactly what happened this weekend.

Watching the events unfold this weekend, former Israeli ambassador to the US said:

“The USA is our closest ally. They have been there for Israel time & again over the years. But the horrific events in Afghanistan must be a hard, scary lesson about changing interests & cold, hard calculations.”
“Dangerously, in 2021, self-reliance is more important than ever,” he said.

“But self-reliance doesn’t mean do whatever you want,” Lenk continued. “Doesn’t mean Israel is alone and friendless. Need to protect partnerships, relationships, alliances and reputation.”

“But have to have a plan for a rainy day when all of the above might fail,”

Please watch the video beginning in 1:03:00 onwards. I want the people on this forum that are way more knowledgeable on these subjects than I am to assess the man's comments in light to what's happened now.

NOT an expert here, just my 2 cents.

1) The Russians and Chinese did help the North Vietnamese fight the imperialist. The numbers involved, probably everyone will give a different story, but the main point that there were big powers behind them in this proxy war, that is not in dispute.

That war ended a long time ago, and it is just history now.

2) General Clark talked about increasing the firepower and man power to fight the war.

That is typical right wing American thinking, which I believe the Chinese leadership think is stupid ass stupid.

Vietnam and Afghanistan, both were guerilla wars. All the American B-52s and Agent Orange did not affect the eventual outcome.

Seems like this thinking, or always increasing, overextends the military and political will.

3) The most important lesson of the Vietnam War, from a standpoint of selling it to the public, is do not let the public know.

Wars tend to not be that popular. The slogan was they would be home before Christmas., when the Americans went to Korea. They did not want to fight another long war, so they would be home by Christmas. The PVA gave the US Marines the worst retreat in their history, and fought to a bitter stalemate for 3 years.

In Vietnam, the Americans for whatever reasons, did not control the images and self-sabotaged the war fighting efforts in the field. There was also the draft.

Color TV was invented. There was the nightly news. Americans after work or dinner, would turn on the TV to watch the news, only to see young Americans dying in a foreign land right on their TV sets. Then the images of killing those hapless Vietnamese villagers and decent Americans had enough. End the war and get out.

4) The Gulf War the first one by the Americans, where they embedded the reporters with a military unit, that worked well for the Americans, and we have been subjected that that propaganda ever since.

I suspect that this will not work with the Chinese if America fights them. The Chinese will film the dying Americans on Huawei phones and upload to the internet.

It’s a sign of how catastrophically badly western intelligence fucked up that the only British carrier was messing around in the SCS and western pacific when this went down. If they had any serious idea that things could go down the toilet so quickly they would have had carriers and LHDs in the Indian Ocean ready to evacuate their civilians. That there is the main reason why this is so much worse than Saigon. Back during a the Saigon evacuation there were massive US naval and air assets in place to evacuate westerns and their local lapdogs. This time round they didn’t even have assets to get their own pink skinned nationals out. If the Taliban wanted it, they could have had a lot of pink heads literally on poles lining all the roads. The fact that westerns are going getting out alive by the grace and mercy of the Taliban of all people is a damning sign of how catastrophically they are fucking this up.
But Afghanistan is landlocked isn't it? What can sea assets do to assist?

Carrier and LHDs can bring a lot of helicopters for mass evacuations as well as warplanes for support and intimidation.

Under the circumstances, I doubt Pakistan would object to western naval helicopters using their airports as temporary refuelling and drop off points for western evacuation efforts. I mean, where do you think all those black hawks and Chinooks currently plucking westerns from rooftops are dropping them off to?

And I was going to post how long until they blame China...? Lara Logan on FOX News said the Taliban were being funded by China, Pakistan and others. The US has lost every war since WWII and they're still in denial. Like I've been saying, you wanna know what path the US will take? It's the one that supports their white supremacists beliefs as in just because they invade a country, they think the people will greet them as saviors rather having them in control and the rest is easy. I've also been hearing in the last few days pundits on TV saying they were in Afghanistan to save the women. But a Uighur genocide they do nothing but give lip service...

The US ambassador has left.

France has relocated its embassy in Kabul to the airport. Evacuations have been in progress for weeks and a charter flight put in place by France in mid-July. Since May, France has taken in Afghan employees at French structures under potential threat, with 600 people relocated to France.
