The total flight time for this Wingloon-2H is said 16 hours in total. One way flight took 4 hour and 1,200km. Total time spent on duty area is 8 hour 8 minutes. Looks like time allocated to China Mobile Telecommunication by China Emergency Service is only 5 hours from the total 8 hours loitering over the flooded Mihe town.

Besides restoring SMS service, the UAV also carry out other tasks such as photo-survey of the area by optical camera and radar mapping of the flood.

It took off at 14Hr 22min July 21st, and landed back at base on 06hr 15 min July 22nd.

据“翼龙”系列无人机的研制方航空工业官方微信公众号的消息,灾情发生后,“翼龙”-2H应急救灾型无人机便为此次任务做好了准备。7月20日20时,航空工业接灾情探测任务,“翼龙”-2H待命,并完成移动通信基站、合成孔径雷达、光电吊舱系统调试、加油等飞行准备工作,系统运行正常。7月21日14时22分,“翼龙”-2H起飞,奔赴河南受灾地区,在穿越贵州省、重庆市、湖北省、河南省(三省一市),经过4小时的飞行,飞行近1200公里后,于18时21分进入米河镇通信中断区。报道称,利用“翼龙”-2H无人机空中应急通信平台搭载的移动公网基站,实现了约50平方公里范围长时稳定的连续移动信号覆盖。

据中国移动的消息,截至21日晚11时20分,中国移动基站累计接通用户3572个,产生流量2089.89M,单次最大接入用户648个,为灾区提供移动通信保障。

航空工业的消息显示,7月22日6时15分,“翼龙”完成任务后降落。此次任务总飞行时间近16小时。在任务区内作业时间共计8小时8分。“翼龙”应用宽、窄带组网设备和移动公网设备,保证受灾人员可及时获取专网和移动网络信号,还应用CCD航测相机、EO光电设备和SAR合成孔径雷达,对受灾区域进行拍照和监测,实时将有关信息回传至指挥中心,解决了“三断”极端

I sense a lot more orders coming for this variant of Wingloong…

On a related note, Typhoon In-fa and Cempaka may make a landfall along the eastern coast of China. Should there be wide scale destruction (which I hope won’t happen) Wingloong will need to be used once again.

How much internal changes is there in this model compared to baseline surveillance/attack units? Is it basically a different machine under the hood, or could any WL be converted for such missions with the right payload pods?

If you can convert any standard block WL to this version then they could’ve easily retrofitted GJ-1s in service with PLAAF to provide additional coverage. They didn’t, which makes me think that there are major changes under the hood.

Or it could be that they only have one base station pod prototype at present.

The pod seems to be standard detachable, and I cannot see any other changes to the airframe which makes me hopeful that this capacity is all contained within the pod and once fully developed, any WL or similar Chinese UAV would be able to mount it to gain this ability.

If it is technically feasible, that’s the design direction I would have gone, as few nations have the budget to have such a dedicated niche UAV, and would not need many even if they do buy it. That would massively limit the potential market for them.

Having this as a stand alone pod based capacity would make it cheap enough that many if not most WL users would opt to have it; and it could be another major selling point for the WL itself. However that’s all speculation, so it would be good if there were definitive answers.

With the communications equipment being detachable modules, a large number of UAVs would be able to be rapidly deployed as a communications network.

In a conflict over Taiwan the PLA can potentially shut down the Taiwanese telecommunications network and replace it with an aerial network. Rather than using extensive resources to control and protect existing Taiwanese telecommunications network, less resources can be used to disable and/or destroy facilities. It's is possible that a large percentage of the Taiwanese population won't realize their celluar network had been changed to a mainland one in the event of military conflict. This will hamper mobilization efforts and grass roots coordination. The PRC messages would be more easily received compared to ROC ones on mobile devices.

These UAVs would also be able to intercept messages and transmit messages to confuse forces on the ground.
