Disagree. China educates and reaches out with its media to overseas Chinese all the time. I grew up watching these programs in NYC with my parents.
When your folks migrated, were you old enough to remember life in China? IMO many second-generation onwards have little interest in their forefathers' homeland.

Vietnam seems to have a difficulty to contain Delta.

Ho Chi Minh city where the pandemic hits hardest is technically under lockdown. It will apply Directive 16 from July 9. I'm not 100% sure what is Directive 16 but it said to distance family to family, village to village, district to district. People only go outdoor when necessary such as buying foods, seeking medical service or go to work at factories. Only necessary business allowed to remain operating. So, I interpret this as a total lockdown.

Sinovac vaccine records an effectiveness in Chile of 90.3% for admission to ICU and 86.3% to prevent deaths from COVID-19

In the study there was a cohort of around 10 million people, of which 4 million were vaccinated with the two doses.

This Wednesday, the phase IV study of the Chinese Sinovac vaccine in Chile was published in The New England Journal of Medicine, one of the most prestigious journals in the world.

The document indicates that the effectiveness of the biological among fully vaccinated people (two doses and more than fourteen days since its last application) was 65.9% for the prevention of COVID-19, while in 87.5% it avoided the hospitalization, in 90.3% it prevented admission to the intensive care unit and in 86.3% of a death related to COVID-19.

The research was conducted from February 2 to May 1 of this year and had a cohort of approximately 10.2 million people, of which 4.1 million were already fully vaccinated and 542,418 had received a dose.

"Our results suggest that the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine effectively prevented COVID-19, including serious illness and death, a finding that is consistent with the results of phase 2 trials of the vaccine," it said. .

The document notes that it is estimated that the effectiveness of the vaccine among partially immunized people (14 to 28 days after receiving the first dose) was 15.5% for the prevention of COVID-19, 37.4% for the prevention of hospitalization, 44.7% for admission to the ICU and 45.7% for the prevention of death.

Looks like Spring Sprout program (China donating vaccine, and receiving country must use the vaccine to preferentially vaccinate Chinese nations) in Vietnam is back on track. In earlier weeks Vietnam did not abide by the agreement to preferentially vaccinate Chinese and then withdraw from the distribution program after receiving the first batch of 500,000 doses which the Vietnamese government distributed as they saw fit. Since them however it seems the Vietnamese government have come back to their senses and returned to the program.

I mean, you have 96 million people urgently needing vaccine. What makes more sense to you:
  • nick 500,000 Chinese vaccine, angering the world's largest COVID-19 vaccine exporter
  • distribute the 500,000 vaccine according to plan, and maybe sing some praises in China's direction and then ask for more

Original article from CNBC mentioned six countries out 36 countries with high vaccination rate. Other media picks it up with a headline with only five countries. That's how propaganda at work. Anyway, in a few more weeks, many highly vaccinated countries would add to this list so have fun now.

I just think it is better off ending the discussion of travel bubble between Singapore and Hong Kong. Hong Kong should focus upon reopening the border among Macau and mainland. Beside, Singapore plans to give up on eradication and live with the virus soon.

If a booster shot can help to fend off the Delta variant, I would say just go for it. Public opinion is secondary now as the medical community needs to come first.

What an nice example of Western media jumping to inappropriate conclusions too early without investigating all the facts?

The reason for the update? Because the 16-year boy was weight-lifting 2X his body weight and taking "supplements" (steroids?) which is the primary cause for his cardiac arrest, not that the vaccine is dangerous.

You can't trust journalists man, they jump to conclusions without all the facts/information.

The United Arab Emirates and Seychelles that are among the 5 countries mentioned have a very low case-fatality rate, much lower than most European countries if not all (I gave up after checking through quite a few.)

Seychelles has a high case rate because the authorities there have decided to continue opening the country's doors to tourists, the main source of income for the country.

That depends entirely on the way those second-generation children are educated.
Of course. My Father says even up to the early 1970's The Nationalist Chinese anthem was sung at weddings and other cultural functions such as the "Double Tenth" celebrations. It was a chance to have a day off from school. It slowly died away after NZ recognized the PRC in 1972.
I remember speaking to a guy who said some of them went back to visit their relatives back in China and found the reception rather cool, just short of telling them to F O. My guess is they felt let down by not getting enough financial support during the difficult years.

PLA WOLF SAID "And that’s the best case scenario. The UK is playing with fire, and there is a real danger that they end up breeding a new vaccine resistant super variant that reset the entire world’s vaccination efforts back to zero."

Maybe, but looking at the shambolic manner the US handled their pandemic and yet we did not see a virulent US strain emerge.
