"Yet we still have a sufficiently competitive marketplace of ideas that the truth soon finds its way in." Really? Tell that to the 46% of Americans who would vote for Trump tomorrow.

An interesting analysis. However, the lies that China tells are not that much different from American lies about slavery benefitting everyone, lies about the guarantees of native American tribal lands, lies about the coming Great Depression, lies about Viet Nam, lies about Iraq, and the list goes on. Almost half the population still believes Trump's lies about everything. I think we lie and buy into lies as much as anyone.

I think it's time for us to stop being so critical of China, and concentrate on the problems we have at home in the United States. The mistakes that Xi Jinping makes are HIS problem. The mistakes the United States government makes are OUR problem. The last thing we need is a "moral" crusade against yet another foreign country in the name of "freedom."

Another example of how something has always been there but since it's now being used in a way they're not use to and usually against them, they give a name to make it looks like some thing new. Just like with political correctness or identity politics aka racism and now cancel culture. You can only praise the US. It's all or nothing or you get cancelled.

Thats the problem with folks like Elon. Suppose that Xi bank rolls his Mars rocket. I swear that he’d be reciting tenets of Xi Jinping thoughts from the surface of the Red Planet.

Honestly, as long as he can go to Mars he can recite whatever he wants

People like Elon are what China needs to compete with the US.

He single handedly saved the US EV and space industries.

This is exactly my thinking from an American presepective too

A second power check serves us and keeps the US in check (countries have a choice to always go to the other country if we're not treating them right (because unlike Soviets Chinese at least till now aren't interfering in internal affairs, don't know how long it'll last...))

and if we lose the status as super power that's even better it'll give US a much needed breather where focus will shift on domestic issues, welfare of it's people
I hope sooner rather than later. I've got work guaranteed for the next few years but it's barely enough to support my parents and sister. If I go too far in to debt I'll end up losing even that much.

I too think Elon is at once someone capable of coming up with the goods once in a while but also a con man wearing his "Iron Man" persona specialising in raising money for dubious business cases.

Nevertheless people like him are useful for China. Investments into China aside his public praise of China (along with others like Nike, Apple etc) means others in G7 are more easily able to see the whole Cold War 2.0 is an US ploy to get the others to stay clear of China so the US could hog all the business opportunities.

Isn't the us overestimate its gdp by including over inflated legal and medical service "productivity".
