I think there is limited app that are own by the like of google or facebook. But if the new Harmony gain traction they too will ported their app to Harmony .Time will tell

It would be a matter of convincing the App developer to come aboard and then it will be a simple matter of compiling the Apps' source code with little change to run on Harmony OS.

The Android variant that is sold in China already lacks all the Google Mobile Services that is the key to the Google ecosystem. Since the Chinese consumer continue to buy Android phones without GMS, then the transition could be pretty seamless.

I too think there will be no problem if it's just for China. My point is, currently both domestic version and global version are fundamentally same modified software of Android, the difference being some applications. On the other hand, to support both HarmonyOS and Android versions, two different OS, their software team will have to develope and maintain two modified versions separately based on two different operating systems. It's double burden, especially if you consider how much time it takes for smartphone manufacturers to release updates and their own modified versions of a new Android version.

Android apps work on HarmonyOS because HUAWEI placed some Android codes in HarmonyOS to support Android apps, but HarmonyOS is still a different system (There seem to be native HarmonyOS apps and developer tools). And that's about app compatibility but what I'm talking about is making manufacturer's own modified versions of the OS (such as MIUI, OxygenOS, ColorOS etc), which is a different matter. What I'm sceptical about is manufacturers will make their modified versions of both Android and HarmonyOS because it will take too much time and effort.

When we are talking about app ecosystem, its basically few dozone superapps that are truly essential to most users. Primarily maps, facebook and youtube. China already have similar app which needs to expand further in asia and rest of the world gradually. Just look at the popularity of PUBG mobile and TikTok. If developer make aweome app and make it accessable to users outside of china, then so many people are gonna use those app. I personally spend more than 1k on PUBG alone. Never thought I would had spent so much money on ingame gun skins. Inthe meanwhile I can’t even create an account in alibaba yet.

To be honest I think Instagram and snapchat was the last big social media thing app from the west.

From what I can gather Tiktok is the latest social media hype that will probably be supported on Harmony.
I also heard western gen Z loves shopping on Shein which is also a Chinese app.
It also seems having a super app like wechat is really gathering steam in Asia, which gives China a big advantage given the trend started their.

This whole mobile app innovation wave is happening in Asia not in the west, that is also why I want to emigrate in a couple of years to Asia. Asia is a lot more dynamic when it comes to that sort of software engineering, EU is subjected to whatever the US accepts as cool.

China also seems to develop their gaming industry with games like Genshin Impact and the awesome recruitment trailer of Black Myth: Wukong.
