“We have a stand here and I want to state it here and now again that our ships there... we will not move an inch backward,” Duterte said, adding “I will not withdraw. Even if you kill me. Our friendship will end here.”

For those who are not familiar with Philippine politics, this recent statement from Duterte can be taken with a grain of salt, its just lip service for the sake of making the impression that he is not giving China too much leeway in the SCS. Don't expect any major change in his China policy, everything will remain the same until a new government is elected next year.

Agreed. Duterte must keep the "tough" persona.

Plus, he achieved his goal. The US think-tanks have already start salivating about Philippines breaking off from China, becoming an enemy, reviving the US basing rights deal etc Lol!

That is a lot of weasel wording
I don't know about you guys but this man Duterte is becoming an annoyance more than anything. Literally a weasel in disguise. I don't get how he's popular at all when all he has shown is being a 2 faced fool.

He has to deal with the Philippine politics which is very corrupt and very pro-America and the fact that he's still popular despite his overtures to China and displacing America to the sidelines should give you pause to appreciate that no other Filipino politician could get away with what he's done period.

But having said that, Duterte must navigate the very treacherous terrain of the Philippine politics when as you must be aware he's on the last leg (year) of the administration until the election next year. The political animals in the Philippines that are very pro-America are working very hard everyday to damage his name and reputation to handicap whomever candidate(s) Duterte will support as his replacement.

The man is being attacked from the covid-19 handling, to the vaccine procurement issues to the use of Chinese made vaccines; and most potentially damaging of all is the persistent issue regarding the disputed islands between China where the administration must navigate with extreme caution due to the Filipino public's very negative attitude towards China. Which is why Duterte must issue this tough talking statements to blunt and placate the pressures both from within his own cabinet and outside politicians who amusingly accuse him of cowardice and worst calling him a "dog of China". You must pick your poison wisely.

Extremely well said. I feel that once Duterte's done, he should be given a Friendship Medal.

This guy
Duterte is smart. See what he wrote

“I was frank enough in the early days and I said that might makes it right. And we are not, unfortunately, on the side of might, so we cannot do anything because we cannot be in parity in force and so we have to talk,” he continued.
“Just talk and talk until such time by the grace of God if there’s an opportune time for all of these things to correct itself,” he also said.
All this story is empty talk

Right now he's the best China can have, like what the others have said, he is navigating the treacherous terrain of Philippine politics that is filled with Pro-American stooges from left and right. If China intends to keep the PH a friendly neighbor in the long term or at least a neutral player in SCS, China will need to increase Chinese immigration to the country and support the already established Chinese communities in the country to enable them to have a bigger say and re[resentation in the country's political space.
