It made it onto Taiwanese mainstream news. Just saw it on TV. Posting the online version here:

So all these links say the same thing

The Chinese aircraft carrier "Liaoning" stayed in place on the east coast of Hainan Island for nearly a day, causing heated discussions and speculation about whether it was malfunctioning.
Now PTT has rumored that "Liaoning" has lost power and is being towed by a tugboat
Lmao so do ships have to be moving all the time and when they stop it means they have power loss?...

However, according to military reporter Duan Dang's Twitter post, the latest satellite photos show that the "Liaoning" is currently being escorted by the People's Liberation Army missile frigate, moving north in the northeast sea of the South China Sea
So, a nothing-burger

I would advice to avoid Taiwanese news for these kinds of things. They are highly unreliable

Sources here in Taiwan are saying that they have "insider sources from the PLAN" saying that Liaoning busted 7 of her 8 boilers when "escaping from USN pursuit in the SCS". Not only has Liaoning lost all of her power and can only maintain its basic functions, most crew (apart from a skeleton crew) has been evacuated and Liaoning is currently being towed to a unnamed naval base by 6 tugboats for maintenance. Below is a photo allegedly photographed by a USN aircraft.

Use some common sense please.

... Seriously, are you going to Taiwan news sources for first pass info on PLA matters now?

It'd actually be good for PLAN if the ship indeed had a serious malfunction that leads it to losing power. That'd be valuable real world experience. How to quickly organize salvage, protection screen, test everything, etc etc. This comment does not suggest anything regarding to the veracity of the rumor, of course.

Agreed, but I must admit that image is strange ... at least I don't remember any image showing the Liaoning with so many tugs, that could be used to fake thsi news. On the other side if real, it would be all over the mainstream media and not only in Taiwan.

Okay, and if Liaoning is OK, I guess we could have a view proving it...not coming from a Chinese military journalist or the Taiwanese press.
