What do the counter sanctions by China mean for these individuals? No EU bank will let them use their services if they want to operate in China?
The statement is similar to what was in Pompeos sanctions and i dont think Pompeo is being denied service by any bank.

If you look at Japanese society, it is really homogeneous and rigid. Change doesn't come easily.
And there's basically one political centre (Tokyo) which also dominates economically.

In comparison, China has multiple economic regions and political centres, which are all competing with each other.
And you've also got the effect of a large Chinese diaspora, along with a significant number of ethnic minorities inside China, and shared borders with different countries.

All this variety should keep China much more innovative and risk-taking than Japan.

What do you think the reason is for productivity adjusting for work hours (since East Asian countries work far longer hours) being so damn low? Japan scoring worse than Southern Europe, Korea being even worse?

I don’t understand this. Is it just a factor of too much wasting time due to the extra working hours providing almost 0 productivity?

They might try to ban the China-EU trains that goes through Xinjiang also.
They'll ban anything and everything that comes out of Xinjiang and will soon extend it to Tibet and other regions. I expect the 5 eyes to come up with their own set of sanctions.

Economic & diplomatic war has been waged and it will be seen how China responds to it. As of now the options with China are limited. It doesn't have the capacity to respond against 2 major economic blocks.

This is what Biden meant when he said "building alliances".

Wow.
Big news. China has also sanctioned Germany's Mercator Institute for China Studies.

This is a major major think tank providing analysis to EU policy makers for China. This is basically China blinding one EU's eye into the China. They are now banned from communicating with any Chinese organisation.

Significant escalation from China's part. EU probably thought that EU would slap some meaningless sanctions and China will respond in kind. These are big counter sanctions from China.

Sanctioning a country for genocide is very serious even if it is just symbolic. It is basically accusing the target country of committing genocide. In my opinion, China responded appropriately. Now, China should keep its words and kick out every single company or institution that preserves its association with the said people and entities.
