Anything that makes China less dependent on the Indian Ocean and the Panama Canal are a plus.
Rail transport to Europe is still dwarfed by the size of Ocean going freight But it is a start the infrastructure still undeveloped It take some time to augment the cargo with more port, streamlined custom, and warehouse But it will developed over time and reduce but not eliminate the vulnerability

@gadgetcool5 That my friend will transform Laos economy enormously, who in their right mind will invest such big investment with little return, the West? I'm envious of Laos, They had nothing to offer geopolitically but seek cooperation with China their neighbor, if the Philippines have not had this petty disagreement with China that investment should be ours, the short sightedness of our previous gov't who tied their fortune with the West instead of its owned.

@Hendrik_2000 As they say in China "build it and they will come". You have to create a situation to make it economically viable instead of waiting for the market to exist. That is how investment should be use instead of quick return like a stock market speculation.

One of the main hurdles is different rail gauges... I don't know how receptive the countries are to using the same rail gauge. If they can agree on it the speed will be a lot more competitive.

Like with Australia and Facebook if Australia is complaining that their local news isn't getting paid for their content posted on Facebook, a legitimate way to stop it is to not allow news links in Facebook for Australians. But no the whole things was about Australia wants the money not get rid of Facebook. If Hollywood is complaining about China influencing Hollywood, one way to stop that is not to have their movies shown in China. But nope! They still want the money. They just don't want China to have any say in exchange.

Thats true ... even China, EU, North America, Australia, ME, etc use the same rail gauge, its called Standard gauge 1,435 mm

Unfortunately, NZ and Indonesia rail gauge is significantly narrower, only 1,067 mm

While Russia and ex USSR countries use wider rail gauge 1,520 mm

And also unfortunately countries in IndoChina, Bangladesh and Malaysia use different width again, significantly smaller, only 1,000 mm

So, it is complicated and costly to run train from China to EU or Russia or IndoChina

A classic case of having your cake and eat it too.

That said I think that Chinese censors get butt hurt over the wrong stuff. I’m all for rejecting Fu Man Chu style vilification, but not every detail of a film needs to be scrutinized. Hopefully the rules will be laxer when younger people are in charge.

Yeah it puts bogus GDP in USD numbers in perspective.
The US can simply print itself into higher GDP numbers. They can buy a pair of socks from China by $1 USD, change a label, resell it at a steep markup like at $10 USD, and then US economy "contributes" $9 USD in value while Chinese economy contributes $1 USD in value.

GDP in USD is BS. It is when we look at hard real world numbers like these that we can see it.

Sums up the FIRE sector. But nah... investment wankers and all those traders contribute with market making and efficiency! Playing around with numbers is real wealth lol.
