Coronavirus 2019-2020 thread (no unsubstantiated rumours!)

I would like to remind everyone that a vaccine has two purposes: (1) to completely protect people from viral infection; (2) partial protection (if infected, alleviate the symptoms and save lives). It is never intended for any vaccine to only act to completely prevent infection. We know this from our experience with flu vaccines. With flu vaccines, even when we are sick, we can get better within a couple days instead of the normal a few weeks.

Data on the current Pfizer and Moderna vaccines only show complete protection vs. symptomatic. Solely looking at the complete protection is kind of extreme. We are asking a vaccine to do the impossible. We cannot ignore those cases, where the symptoms of those with vaccines become milder. If we can lower the severity of the symptoms to a level of a common flu, that would be equally great. However, because of the time constraint and the limited number of the infected individuals in these trials, the severity of an infection cannot be properly evaluated in a clinical trial. Hopefully, we will see the effect of vaccines on severity in a few months when a major population has been inoculated.

So you think the approved sinopharm's vaccine with 79% efficacy already includes the asymptomatic cases? If so, again what do you think about the difference between the two? I also don't think that this time sinovac is pressured to release this since the brazilian government already sign a deal with them to get 100 million doses. So it's not like they refuse to buy it unless this announcement are made.

The categorization is just so extreme, like earlier someone here mentioned how pfizer doesn't even count some subjects that has covid symptoms since they don't do the PCR tests to confirm it for some fuckin reason, let alone testing everyone to check for the asymptomatic cases. The resulting data from different countries are also so all over the place (65% indonesia, 50-78% brazil, 91% turkey), the whole thing is just so 'confusing', for a lack of better phrase. Why do they even bother to make this seemingly unnecessary announcement that can most likely harm their product's rep?

I knew that already, which is why I compare it to another domestic vaccine maker sinopharm, a state owned company as bonus too, unlike sinovac. Comparison between vaccines can't just be based on the efficacy rate, yes I agree. Stuffs like storing method and price can also have an effect, though again it's hard to see a merit to ever choose sinovac over sinopharm if both are readily available, given that they are very similar except the efficacy difference.

Firstly, I don't know if 79% includes asymptomatic cases or not but the Chinese government wants to have all data before evaluating the vaccine. That means the Chinese government decides what to include or what not to include for calculating the efficacy rate not the pharmaceutical companies.

Secondly, the butantan institute and Brazil state government released the data not Sinovac. Sinovac has not obtained the approval from Brazil anvisa so the agreement is meaningless if the Brazil government decided not to grant the approval.

Thirdly, I don't think Sinovac wanted to announce anything until the Chinese government approved its vaccine. However, Brazil state government, Indonesia, and Turkey don't want to wait. They want to start the vaccination as soon as possible. So they would release the interim results as soon as they could. That's why it is a mistake for Sinovac to conduct clinical trials in high risk groups and Brazil.

Again, the efficacy rate needs to come from the Chinese government not from Brazil or other places to make a fair comparison.

The Australian and New Zealand Society for Immunology says the federal government should immediately pause the planned rollout of the AstraZeneca vaccine because it may not be effective enough to generate herd immunity.

Phase three clinical trials of the vaccine, which is the centrepiece of Australia's vaccination strategy, show it is only 62 per cent effective in preventing COVID-19 when given in the recommended dose. Trials suggest vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are about 95 per cent effective.

Meanwhile german chancellor merkel said that her country must stop this "british virus" from overrunning germany lmaoo
Can't wait to enjoy the anglos butthurt
The Anglos started this racist baiting over origins of virus, i got no sympathy for them getting shitcanned for the new deadlier strain.

Thanks to their bullshit, future pandemics are going to be running out of control before the WHO can take action because nations will now be wary of being labeled "xyz virus"
