Literally BIG news. Pun intended.

Yangzijiang, Jiangnan and Hudong Zhonghua secured orders for two 24,000 TEU boxships each, for a total of 6. At 24,000 TEU, these will be the largest ships built in the world. The ships will be chartered by MSC.

These follows a spate of 23,000 TEU boxship orders made by ONE to Japanese shipyards and Hapag Lloyd to Korean shipyards.

Is this a true 24K TEU? Because the one with the Japanese and Korean shipyards was billed as 24K TEU too, when in reality it's a couple of hundred TEU short of 24K.

The ones that were ordered to Japanese and Korean shipyards are billed as 23K TEU, but they are between 23K to 24K. The Jacques Saade class ordered to CSSC are billed as 23K TEU, but its between 23 to 24K.

If the ships are billed 24K, then it's between the range of 24K to 25K.

Here is more info to clarify.

The Hapag Lloyd boxships ordered to DSME are about 23,500 TEU, not 24,000. HMM Algeciras is 23,800 TEU. ONE ordered boxships to Imabari are said to be 24000, which is slightly over 24000.

The new Hudong Zhonghua boxship is 24,100 TEU. This image was posted in the Hudong Zhonghua presentation.

Forgive me for not being clear, my bad. It was billed by the media outlets as 24K TEU. Perhaps the media just wanted to spice things up a bit, so they can get more people to view/read about it.

The wharf on the right side of the picture is where Hudong Zhonghua wharfs its ships after they are done, conducts ceremonies, and we have seen anything from Type 071s to LNG carriers being moored there. The first Type 075 was also moored there for a short period.

The new facilities appear to be joint between between Jiangnan and Hudong Zhonghua, under the combined CSG banner. So far Hudong Zhonghua hasn't built any warship on its facilities in Changxing, the place has the potential to ramp up 075s and 076s if they need to, beyond the constriction placed on HDZ's older Huangpu river facility.
