Lol the average British soldiers height was 5ft 8 inches in WW2, and about 5ft 7 inches in WW1.

Obviously the nutritional deficits of 1910s and 1940s British men were far worse than 2020s Japanese men. Stop trying to make this debatable.

I really not sure what you are trying to say or proof. Are you saying I'm wrong and therefore I should not be debating this?

I quoted that height figures from memory, when I was studying social and economic history when I was at university, over 30 years ago. where as you got that information from the first page of wiki!

My memory still serves me well, here's the extract below.

Never mind, here's a direct quote for you. Happy now? I have no axe to grind, but you seem to have an issue of some sort.

"Today, the average height of an adult British Caucasian male is about 5’9”. In 1914, their average height was 5’2”, though a member of the upper class stood about 5’6” These findings shamed the government into providing subsidized health care for common people"

@sinophilia @Gatekeeper Sinophilia, you shouldn't try to ruin things by asking people to stop debating. Even geneticists and nutritionists don't fully understand human height growth and human height potential. There's also epigenetics, where you can tweak your phenotype despite what genotype suggests, which is still not properly understood.

As you can see, Japanese are missing sufficient calcium intake by more than 100mg/day. If you want to maximize your height potential, you not only have to reach the sufficient intake amt, you have to exceed it. It's clear Japanese aren't consuming enough calcium for even proper health, let alone increasing height. This doesn't mean they're malnourished, but they're not hitting what the healthy and maximizing potential states.

No point in discussing anything further when you say something like this. I majored in genetics. I don't really talk about things authoritatively when I don't know what I'm talking about. Apparently you do, which is fine.

PS: For epigenetics to actually modify a phenotype you'd have to have the requisite method pass the traits down into the germline from the brain. Hilarious.

@Gatekeeper Oh please, if you actually have a major in genetics, then I guess Gatekeeper and I have multiple PhDs in genetics, biology and epigenetics? The way you described epigenetics is the reverse of how it occurs. Look, I've given a few scientific articles, but you haven't given a single citation. If you are as knowledgeable in genetics as you claim, why don't you just explain the genetics of Japanese like yayoi and jomon to us peons?

I believe diet plays a part. Americans during the civil war era were shorter than they are today. I'm taller than your average American. Asian-Americans that have been in the US for at least a couple generations are taller than the average Asian immigrant to the US. It's also no secret that the US meat industry adds hormones to their livestock so they grow bigger. It's not hard to make a conclusion why Americans think everyone else is short.

I have no idea what you're even talking about. You are jumping from how heritable height is and the role of nutritional deficiencies in Japanese that supposedly cause stunting, to the same ole bullshit regarding epigenetic germline inheritance to now asking me to "explain the genetics of Japanese".

Try to be more specific in your words. You are all over the place. And if you really want to have the discussion maybe move it to another thread.

This isn't breaking news.

Past tense. Not present tense. Did. Americans aren't getting any taller, nor are Japanese. Nor are any fully developed countries. Chinese are just naturally taller than Japanese, for better or worse.

Anyway, I'm done with the height convo here since it's so off-topic and mods here hate that.
