In a comprehensive study by the Lancet,

19 year old Chinese are now the tallest in Asia, overtaking 19 year old South Koreans. Young Koreans and Chinese are now above 175cm or 5 foot 9 inches. I bet a lot of Korean nationalists would be annoyed, because previously Koreans were taller than Chinese, therefore proof that Koreans had so-called 'superior Korean genetics'. But Chinese youths are now taller than Korean youths. Japanese are still shorter than Koreans/Chinese, and to me one factor is that Japanese simply have less protein in their diets, and they like eating smaller meals than Koreans and Chinese.

That is not the reason. You are not going to get much taller simply supplementing your diet like that. The reason Chinese are always going to be taller than Japanese (if you ignore technological enhancement or surgery) is simply due to genetics.

It's more complicated than what you wrote. It's not simply due to genetics. The Dutch were among the shortest in the world, and grew 20cm (8 inches) in 150 years. There's are many factors.

Dutch people used to be tiny... so why are they suddenly giants?

.

That doesn't rebut what I said. Environmental factors exist when a country has serious nutritional deficits. Japan does not have serious nutritional deficits.

Japanese eat 35% less meat meat than Koreans and Chinese. They average 35kg of meat per person over a year, while Koreans and Chinese average 50kg of meat per person a year.

Japanese are not malnourished, they just aren't maximizing their potential. Trust me Japanese are even thinner than Koreans and Chinese, and if they eat 15kg more meat every year, they're gonna be bigger and taller. They just like eating small portions.

There are ceilings to the amount of protein (or any other nutrient) you need to consume to insure there is no environmental effect on the genetic potential for stature. Japanese more than meet those nutritional requirements (protein included).

Environmental effects on the variability of height are not as flexible as you are implying.

I highly doubt what you wrote. I personally observed Japanese not drinking as much dairy either. Modern Koreans and Chinese parents like to force feed their children milk. This such culture doesn't exist in Japan, force feeding children milk so they'll grow taller.

Go read the Dutch studies. There are environmental plus sociocultural plus genetic factors involved.

"That’s too fast for it just to be a genetic effect,” said Barrett, although she believes natural selection played a part."

"Then there’s the Dutch diet: people in the Netherlands have a voracious appetite for dairy, and studies suggest this has contributed to their increased height. “Calcium builds bone and growth is dependent on having a good supply of that,” Barrett explained."

I'm a bit busy right now so I can't pull data, but I think while Japanese eat less meat than their neighbors, they drink even less milk than their neighbors. Let me pull the data when I have time later.

Oh and there's also epigenetics.

Exactly, during the first world war, the average heights of the Tommies were below 5ft 6inches or 1m 60cm.

Lol the average British soldiers height was 5ft 8 inches in WW2, and about 5ft 7 inches in WW1.

Obviously the nutritional deficits of 1910s and 1940s British men were far worse than 2020s Japanese men. Stop trying to make this debatable.
