Even at $40/dose, total cost is $40 billion/billion people.

Considering the world suffered $trillions in damages, I think it's worth it.

Chinese people were rushing to get Sinovac.

Yes.

But from what I can see, the adenovirus vaccines are safer and are actually further ahead in terms of Phase 3 testing than the mRNA vaccines.

So why are Moderna and Pfizer making these ridiculous marketing announcements?

The only reason is to grab profits and market share while they can.

That is prizing profit over safety.

No adenovirus vaccines have ever entered the market either.

I would say mRNA is still safer since you have less chance of introducing the gene into the genome vs the adenovirus. Adenovirus isn't supposed to either but who the hell knows.

Also, we haven't seen any ADE effects yet, fingers crossed this doesn't occur.

If it doesn't work, then Pfizer and Moderna will get the heat. Let's see how it turns out.

Personally I'm excited by the potential of mRNA vaccines for the future since it requires less time to develop. I've been in talks with people on acquiring the know-hows recently :).

But you do actually have thousands of people who have participated in Phase 2 trials of Adenovirus vaccines for over a decade now.
And there's no side effects so far.

You don't have that history with mRNA vaccines.

Also remember that Pfizer and Moderna aren't liable.

In the future, yes, mRNA vaccines great.
But there's a reason why a new vaccine would normally need a 10 year history.

But fundamentally speaking the mRNA vaccine was developed to skip the viral vector to be even safer and easier to develop. I never really doubted the platform's safety, only its effectiveness in delivering the goods.

Not having to use live attenuated/live kill vaccines already eliminates the majority of the danger associated with vaccines.

You know what @AndrewS , I think I'm going to say I don't know.

There's also chance for the mRNA to break up and produce fragmented proteins and potentially unwanted antibodies.

They don't have enough infected patients to make conclusions about the safety of the translated proteins o_O

I suppose that means producing bigger quantities faster?
