Hello, I've read news that Southern China has been heavily hit by floods. Does anyone know how things are going there? How bad is the damage? Are people provided compensation for their damaged property? Will it impact China's economic growth? Thanks,

First of all, flooding happens every year in Southern China. 2020 is more severe than usual, flooding happened in some areas of three major (prefecture level) cities: Hefei, Wuhan and Yichang. Many county and county level cities are affected. The scale is certainly larger than average, but damage is less than an above average hurricane season would do to the USA.

It's actually pretty underwhelming. My girlfriend is in Wuhan. She says it's fine. 2 weeks ago there were a dozen road that got some water pooling. Her supervisor, a lady who lives about only 20 minutes of drive away from their work place, were unable to get to work on time (in fact she got there in the afternoon), two weeks ago on a Tuesday. That's about it. She is fine and on time the next day.

The thing is every summer there are at least some roads in Wuhan that got water pooling under heavy rain. This year, there are more than average, but nothing unprecedented, even in the last decade.

hi jimmyjames30x30

So the Three Gorge Dam help a lot in mitigating the damage from the flood. I read a lot of false news that the dam cannot hold anymore and it might burst.

The 3-Gorges Dam is not about holding water but rather about regulating the amount of water. The Dam will discharge water when its gets to full capacity. Wuhan is having more water pooling today(Monday in China). It got quite severe overnight, and today, even my girlfriend (who lives in Hankou) is having a bad time getting to work today. And it will be pretty bad for the next couples of days. Her uncle and aunt who live in Jiangxia district had an even worse time. The water goes to as high as their their knees, when walking across the roads. Many people are getting around via little inflatable boats. My girlfriend's mom thinks that it's gonna get as bad as 2016, where they will need to get around via inflatable boats.

The 3 gorges reservoir is full, so the dam is discharging water as fast as it can. If it don't discharge Chongqing will be under water soon.

This is why the south-north water transfer project is so important. The three stretches allow a huge amount of water to be transferred north in a flood year. But this is a once in a 80-100 year flood, so severity on this scale is expected.

One of the other suggestions to central government years back to to drill millions of ground water wells/pump systems and use the flooding water to replenish ground water reservoir in a flood year. Basically recharge/withdraw from ground water depending on year. No idea where that idea got to.

Hi PiSigma

That is a good plan, I thought the middle portion of south-north water transfer project is finish, maybe the portion to connect the 3 Gorge Dam reservoir may have encounter some geological difficulties? and also to all members experiencing this flooding , pls stay safe.
