i wonder why, after all these years, the pla-airforce still uses unguided rockets and puts its high valued aircraft at risc of machineguns and manpads, unless it's maybe just for training new pilots.

I think that's just for the cameras. I'm sure they don't actually intend to use fast jets as ground pounders.

It is for training. All countries do it, generally with iron training rounds.

Looking how Russia still does it. I don't think it would be too crazy to think that China still has unguided missile attacks as some leftover in their operation books.

And if you are going for area attacks, it may be not even the worst option out there.

I think that using fast jets for CAS will work only against very low end opponents. Against mid range opponents, those jets will get shot down very easily, never mind against a near peer. Even a rag tag militant group with MANPADS can pose a threat to aircraft. I don't know why they practice those rocket runs, but it is extremely unlikely that China (or most other armies) would use fast jets for CAS. It makes no sense.

edit: do you have a link to any video footage or photos of Russia doing the same? I don't think I've ever seen Russian Su-27s using rockets against ground targets. Russia typically uses the Mi-24/35/28, Ka-52 and Su-25 for ground attack.

Hi,

Battle victories are opportunistic in nature and form.

There will come a time in combat---where an enemy's surface to air fighting capabilities would be extremely diminished in certain sectors of combat due to constant strikes---now that would create opportunity for the ground pounders to pounce in and deliver their goods in that arena of the battle---.

I hope readers understand this concept without me providing a link---.

I don’t know PLA doctrine, but most military training is based on “lowest common denominator”. For example, you’re often using paper maps and compass most of the time even when GPS is available. You drill in the basics and work up to the advanced stuff. The idea being that the advanced stuff merely makes the job easier.
