The AG600, China's large amphibious airplane that will be capable of covering all of the South China Sea, is preparing in Hubei Province to conduct its first maritime test flight this year as planned, despite the novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) epidemic.

The AG600 is undergoing status adjustment and design optimization in Jingmen, Hubei, as all members of its development team at state-owned Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC) have returned to work after the epidemic in the province began to ease, China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Monday.

"The aircraft is ready to start test flight subject training," Lu Yang, deputy head of the Zhuhai base test flight center under AVIC's subsidiary China Aviation Industry General Aircraft Co, told CCTV.

It is scheduled to make its maiden flight at sea this year, CCTV reported.

Sea-based test flights are more challenging than those conducted over land, lakes or rivers because of factors like the complexity of the sea situation and the corrosive ocean environment, a military expert told the Global Times on Tuesday on condition of anonymity.

over a reservoir in Jingmen in October 2018, reports said.

A sea-based test flight will be another milestone in the plane's development, and the COVID-19 outbreak does not seem to have had any major impact on the project, the expert said.

About the size of a Boeing 737, the AG600 can fight forest fires, undertake water rescues, monitor the maritime environment and carry out patrol missions, Xinhua reported in 2019.

When deployed from Sanya, South China's Hainan Province, the AG600 can reach any location in the South China Sea thanks to its endurance of 12 hours and ability to take off and land on water, reports said.

As of March 31, all arms producers in Hubei had resumed operation, with about 65 percent of workers returning to their positions, the Hubei Daily reported on Friday.

If they didn’t approve this sale then there is a good chance that GE’s engine division is doomed.
Mind elaborate, please. According to this article at February, GE Engine is still doing ok: claiming 63% of 787 engine market. BTW, 787 got 1500 order to deliver from 2011, all the way to 2027(?). Means GE Engine order is around 1900.

More than willing to be educated - reason why I'm here. Thanks.

p.s. Agreed w/ Rettan: one very possible explanation for Trump to agree to sell GE engine must be the dim prospect of US economy because of this COVID-19.

Or the other possibility that the China own indigenous CJ-1000 may be already ready for mass production. And USA has the wind of it.
Self reliance is the now the new direction of China high tech ambition.

How about this then? Boeing's commercial aviation division is in a crisis right now:
1. The 737 Max fiasco has resulted in airlines all over the world grounding their 737 fleets. This is seriously bad for Boeing's business and they have lost and will continue to lose even more single aisle orders to Airbus's 320 Neo. Some versions of the A320 were already outselling Boeing's by a factor of 2 and now it will only get worse.
2. The current financial crisis will lead to mass cancellation of airplane orders for years to come. Many airlines will be going bankrupt, and those that won't will be downsizing. Expect mass cancellations of already booked orders and new orders coming to a halt.

Boeing is going to lose tens of billions of dollars in sales, and there will be mass layoffs. If Boeing (and Airbus) doesn't sell planes, then GE doesn't sell engines.

Do you expect trump to block GE from selling engines to China in this situation?

Even if the US didn't have all this to worry about, barring GE from selling engines to China would lead to immediate Chinese reprisal. China is Boeing's largest market, thousands of planes are on order, and China would immediately cancel all their orders with Boeing and shift them to Airbus. Airbus would have been more than happy to sell thousands of A320s.
