The United States is pledging $100 million in aid to help China and other countries dealing with the coronavirus outbreak, according to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

“This commitment — along with hundreds of millions generously donated by the American private sector — demonstrates strong U.S. leadership in response to the outbreak,” Pompeo said in a statement.

Pompeo said the aid would be met through existing funds “both directly and through multilateral organizations.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) has been asking member countries for donations to bolster response efforts after tapping $9 million from its contingency fund for emergencies.

Last week, the State Department helped arrange transportation to China for almost 18 tons of medical supplies.

President Trump on Thursday spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping about the outbreak and expressed confidence in the country’s “strength and resilience in confronting the challenge of the 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak,” a White House spokesman said in a statement.

In a series of tweets Friday, Trump described Xi as “strong, sharp and powerfully focused on leading the counterattack” against the virus and predicted the outcome would be “very successful.”

If you jump to the link, this is what the title (large font) and subtitle (small font) said :

US pledges $100 million to help fight coronavirus in China
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Friday the U.S. would spend up to $100 million to assist China and other countries hit by the coronavirus.
The key words are in the subtitle " $100 million to assist China and other countries ". So the US gives $0.01 to China and $99,999,999.99 to other countries. Pompeo is not lying - Truth in Advertising for Ya !

Not surgical masks.
The surgical masks MIGHT filter out droplets that got the virus.
Those droplets will likely be breathed in from side of the masks and bottom of masks.
Even if not that case, those droplets stay on the mask.
And dry up in maybe 5 to 10 minutes.

Remember the virus will still be alive after many hours and days even when on door knobs and railings and buttons.
You think they die immediately on your mask fibres? Or remain alive.

And the live virus now on your mask fibres.
And when you inhale, the air rushing past the fibres will pick up the virus into your nose and lungs.

I wore N95 masks before. Compulsory in my company in Taiwan during days of SARS.
After 30 mins, it was so uncomfortable , I stopped using it, as with most others.

A mask that likely to work.

Xi Jinping ‘put China’s top echelon on notice’ in early days of coronavirus outbreak
  • Communist Party mouthpiece releases internal speech given to Politburo Standing Committee on February 3 with presidential orders to contain disease
  • Xi makes ‘rare’ disclosure move as he comes under heavy domestic and international pressure, analyst says
contains this interesting quote (or the claim of a quote):
“I issued demands during a Politburo Standing Committee meeting on January 7 for work to contain the outbreak. On January 20, I gave special instructions about the work to prevent and control the outbreak and I have said we have to pay high attention to it,” he said.

now the CNN story mentions, among other things, some "Wang Guangfa"
..., head of a team of researchers sent from Beijing to investigate the situation, said on January 11 that it was under control.
Wang, like others on the front line during the initial outbreak, was subsequently diagnosed with the virus.

Did Xi Jinping know about the coronavirus outbreak earlier than first suggested?

contrary to several billion people, I've always thought surgical face-masks are for a surgeon so that s/he doesn't contaminate the body s/he cut into, and I've always thought a respirator with the proper canister is for protection against viruses

Not that important but surgical masks are worn in Japan to ward off cedar pollen, allergen to Japanese hay fever this time of the year so no just for surgeons.

Heard of the phrase "grasping at straws"?
As said, and repeated

The key word here is "pledges". The amount of times I've heard this. The UN is always constantly chasing money from developed nations that "pledges" but never make good on their "pledges"! Lol

In addition, when I was a student of economics, the way developed countries count their "aids" as national. They include everything from individuals to NGO's as part of the country's total aid package thats part of the "pledges"!

And they include military aids, because a country needs helicopters to distribute aids. And weapons to maintain social order!
