On topic (as if this troll thread and OP is even worth going on topic with) ... I really think CGTN and other Chinese media need to up their game. Both in retaliating against propaganda and improving its reporting quality to eventually get the shine and polish that western media (and now RT) has.

I don't recall CCTV or any other news media showing that drone footage as the actual 31/12/2019 show. They need to remove the association with new year's (Gregorian calendar) but I guess no one really cares to be perfectly honest. The authorities probably called off the event in fear of crowds overwhelming the infrastructure. None of the news media outside of CGTN (around the world and in China) presented this footage as 31/12/2019 in actuality like other cities. CGTN just really need to reword their "2,000 drones took to the night sky and illuminated the Huangpu River in Shanghai to welcome in the new year" but I feel like the local shot callers would like to show it off regardless as a doable thing. Maybe generate some interest.

The main purpose of drone shows like these are not about environment preserving since fireworks are abused in China and there are more pressing areas to worry about. Showing this off is to demonstrate the drone swarm capability that exists now. All the formations and movements are computer controlled... hinting at military applications. These drone light shows have been going on for years. Just the formation and lighting that has been improved.

Not the first time the Chinese did something ridiculous just for the sake of image and publicity.

Of course, the irony is that this little secret will only serve to tarnish their reputation.

Faking it like India's moon lander survived a crash landing and was only tilted a bit?
We can joke and laugh about that, but we shouldn't underestimate India. India's got the grit, determination, no nonsense nose-to-the-grindstone work ethic that's going to take it far. Just take a look at India's next-generation soldier program and tell me you don't see the hallmarks of greatness
Iron Man who?

@Deino @Bltizo please ban that braindead bhakt.

No, let him carry on, it only make him look small and full of envy, as well as stupid !

Also, he needs an outlet to vent all his anger and disappointments that his beloved land still haven't reach superpower status, and worse, still lack way behind their hated country, China.

On current trend, it will take India at least twenty years of solid growth at 7% (never achived before) to reach today's China's economic size! But of course, China is not going to stand still. So as we can see, this hopelessness has engulfed him!

Nope it really isn't the first time except this isn't exactly a good example of one. Let's also not pretend Chinese are any more infatuated with image as for example Indians or Russians or Americans or Africans. We're all more or less the same, but with regards to CCP, I can understand their extra efforts because their survival is at stake so they're on perpetual show-off to Chinese citizens so we seem like we're doing a great job mode. Unfortunately this particular example is not that because it's one channel showing this footage with poor choice of words. Literally no others that I've found or seen on TV or online except for this one isolated clip. Remember that it actually happened as well... just on the 28th as a rehearsal so it's not like they don't have the ability to do this. I guess even in CGTN's defence, they could say they mean welcoming in the new year on the 28th. So what Chinese welcome in the new year by the Lunar calendar anyway. The important point is the technology behind this.

Chinese media literally ignored the Gregorian calendar new year like most of China does. Olympics lip syncing is an actual example of a ridiculous thing for the sake of image though. But that was 2008, the last ridiculous thing done for sake of image. I would say the CCP has gone from many ridiculous things in a year to few to none to some every decade. Lol so seems like the older guys and attitudes are getting phased out.

They did light up the sky. Just three days ahead.

Still with real drones. If its CGI that's an entirely different story.

You say what?

Looks very credible.

In American media, politics and businesses, billions are spent every year just for the sake of image and publicity, regardless of whether it's true, authentic or not. Speaking of tarnished reputation, the whole UN assembly laughed at Trump. That's setting the bar really high.

I understand why someone would start such a thread if that person was in response to news report like this:

I think some Chinese are a little bit over the top in their eagerness to portray China in a positive light, and unfortunately, such persons often lack proper skills in public relations (PR). As a result, their actions could end up doing more harm than good to China's reputation, as the lip-singing during 2008 Olympics demonstrated.

I have to admit that Western politicians, corporations, and media generally have better PR skills than their Chinese counter parts. They also have better mastery of politic correctness. I think Chinese have to improve in both aspects. On the other hand, the West has a tendency to ride the moral high horse, and their hypocrisy often stinks to high heaven.

Finally, the Shanghai skyline is really beautiful at night, with or without drones:

To be honest it didn't even register with me what he was trying to say. It took me a little while to realize it was meant to be some kind of slight against China and/or... me? or my moderating decision, or my commentary? I'm still a little confused, it's rather incoherent.

So, having had a bit of time to properly orient myself.... I'm not sure if the fact that this thread has been open for longer than that other thread -- which presumably is what has triggered the OP of this one -- reflects anything.

I suppose if all things were equal, some acknowledgement of the legitimacy of the original post and then a quick shut down of this thread would be equal treatment.
But I also think there is a difference between wanting to close a thread that may be potentially offensive versus closing a thread that is petty.

For now, this can remain open, but be nice gentleman, and if opinions are to be expressed, please remember to do so in a polite and non-personal manner. Otherwise, this thread will be shortly closed.
