My only question is

are they still the old planes from the last shot or new ones ?

If they are new ones we are seriously behind with numbers

we have just over half a dozen identified using serials

And yet there could be 50 units out there

why such a big discrepancy?

Because it's often forgotten that the only pictures that come out are those the Chinese government allows to come out.

Even if the serial number is not fully visible, Huitong reports this Y-20A with the number '55014', which would correspond to the Central Theater Command transport + SAR brigade (5th Transportation and SAR Brigade 运输搜救第5旅). (Image courtesy of KHK via @航空工业 from Weixin)
