If they are introducing a new sub type of 056A, and has hit the 63rd, my goodness, they might be well going past the 60 ship "barrier".

The PLAN really likes this little ship.

Can't really understand why they would downgrade the 30mm to a smaller caliber, it might be a 14.5mm instead of a .50 cal in the same vein as the Russian MPTU HMG.

Do we have any better pictures? From that image, it’s hard to tell what is mounted, but in general outline, it does not look much, if any, smaller than the 30mm.

The 30mm is in a mini-turret, there are additional mounting points for HMG, so it would not make much sense to sacrifice the 30mm for HMGs that they could have mounted in any case.

Additionally, HMGs are typically not mounted unless they are being used, so that makes me question the claim that the 30mm has been replaced.

The upgrades are nice but I wouldn't take it as strong evidence that construction is going to extend beyond 6x units. It all looks like stuff that could be retrofitted to existing ships and that may well be the intention.

Maybe, we'll see. The upgrades are similar to what we have seen on other ships, indicating that the fleet is being standardized with these fittings.

The ECM unit is all new. I didn't see that one. The ECM unit used by the Type 056 series is unique to the ship and not seen anywhere else.

I can say for certain that the entire gun would fit snugly into just the 30mm barrel and its housing, the new gun is certainly smaller. Plus the new gun has a carrying handle on the barrel much like the QJG-02 14.5mm HMG. In fact it looks very much like it:

Failing that the new gun could possible be the Chinese verions of the 25mm bushmaster cannon, which also has a carrying handle on top of the barrel, still it is a downgrade from the 30mm with it's setup.
This video at 0.22 shows the 25mm cannon :
Also tbf both guns are not exactly small either.

Why they would do so is beyond me, but it won't be the first time a seemingly illogical choice is made. It might have something to do with them testing system redundancy, after all the 30mm turret is powered by motor for its traverse and elevation which can fail, whereas this new gun seems to have the capability of being manhandle if needed.
