Actual commissioning ceremony should take place on its home base. This is more of a ceremony passing the ship from Dalian Shipyards to the PLAN, and handing over the ship to the new crew. Note Dalian Shipyard in the background. Actual commissioning should be inevitably soon though when the ship reaches its new home. It took a while for this particular ship to get her rightful place in the PLAN as she has been sitting in Dalian for a while, so finally, news of her imminent service is most welcome indeed.

See that red banner in the photo? Do you read Chinese?

And who says the commissioning has to take place at a PLAN base? Did you call up PLAN's information office to ask?

Its a ceremony welcoming the crew on board. Saw a similar thing with a 052D and 071 last year. If it was a commissioning it would have hoisted the Chinese flag and all the signal flags. See your own example. Actual ceremony would be very soon enough.


DDG 131 Taiyuan had its commissioning ceremony on base, not on the shipyard, and neither did these ships.

DDG 161 Hohhot was right next to oiler 987 which was also simultaneously commissioned. This was on the south seas base, Zhanjiang.

I think you are right. It was a ceremony to welcome crew on board. I didn't read the banner carefully enough. There was a one-character difference between "commissioning" and "welcome aboard" ceremony.

However, commissioning ceremonies don't have to be performed at a base; they have been carried at a shipyard before, as evidenced by my links.

This one is 117 which I believe is Xining. The shot should have been after her own ceremony has concluded. Note the ceremonial walkaway at the far left. When you have that, like this on a recent tanker, that's all what you need to know a ship has officially joined the fleet.

Not very well admittedly. But are you sure? I don't see anyone who is in retirement age there, and why for the purpose its being held on the helicopter deck of a brand new and not yet commissioned --- picture was taken before its commissioning ceremony --- destroyer.

Oh yeah, I'm certain about what that banner says, but did you expect combat sailors to be demobilized around the same age at which office workers retire? Were you expecting to see senior citizens on that helicopter deck?

You posted two examples that are older the newer one in 2014, while the commissioning of DDG 117 Xining is more recent like in 2017. Xining is from Jiangnan Shipyard and it was commissioned in a base of the North Sea Fleet, as you can see from the surroundings and the blue water around it, which is definitely not Shanghai. The change of venue can be a result of a new policy that was enacted after 2014.

What? I posted only one example. Nothing I posted or linked was from before 2014.

The change of venue can be a result of a new policy that was enacted after 2014.

How can you be sure there is a policy regarding where commissioning ceremonies are held, much less that it was changed? How do you explain all the commissioning ceremonies held at naval bases before 2014?
