here's what DefenseNews has to say:
Japan blames spatial disorientation for F-35 crash

Japan is citing spatial disorientation by the pilot as the likely cause of last April’s

.
It was at that point when Hosomi, who was the leader of the flight of four F-35As, called “knock it off,” indicating the end of the training exercise.

He meanwhile continued his descent, which ended when the F-35A crashed into the Pacific Ocean not more than a minute after the order to descend was given. He had been traveling at an estimated speed of 690 MPH.

The report also concluded that Hosomi, whose remains were recently found, was unlikely to have attempted to eject from his aircraft. The bulk of the aircraft’s wreckage remains on the seafloor, approximately 5,000 feet underwater. Although it was previously reported by local media that an extensive underwater search recovered the aircraft’s flight recorder, it was too badly damaged for any data of the flight to be retrieved.

A news release by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force said the pilot’s last radio transmission, 15 seconds before the time of

, indicated he was conscious at the time, making it unlikely that a loss of consciousness due to G-forces was responsible for the crash.

It also said there were no indications of mechanical or other issues with the Lockheed Martin-made aircraft

The release also retraced the last moments of the aircraft, with the pilot of the F-35, 41-year-old Maj. Akinori Hosomi, declaring that he had scored simulated kills against two of the three other aircraft in his flight at 7:25 p.m. local time on April 9th. He was taking part in an air combat training mission with three other F-35s, as they trained in airspace approximately 85 miles east of Misawa Air Base in the northern part of Japan’s main island of Honshu, from where the aircraft had taken off just before 7 p.m.

At 7:26 p.m., Hosomi was ordered to descend for airspace deconfliction purposes due to U.S. military aircraft operating nearby. He acknowledged the order and complied, descending in a left-hand turn to 15,500 feet from an altitude of 31,500 feet in 15 seconds, reaching speeds of approximately 560 miles per hour.

Instead, Kyodo News, citing anonymous officials, had earlier reported that the crash investigation had most likely gathered data from land-based radars and the information gleaned from the data links on board the other F-35s in the flight.

The news release also said the Japan Air Self-Defense Force will implement additional training to recognize spatial disorientation and G-force-induced loss of consciousness for its F-35 pilots as part of remedial actions following the crash. The service also carried out additional inspections of its F-35s, even though technical issues were unlikely to have been a factor in the crash.

I don't mean to be cynical, but I hope it wasn't a classic cover-up to blame the deceased pilot

no doubt you were a very rebellious teenager, no "OLD MAN" kicking the shit out of you when you screwed up! Well I had an "OLD MAN" that was as damn near perfect as a human could be, we could only hope to be "half the man" he was, no way I'll ever be who he was, but he gave you faith in the USAF, and the US GOVT.

Don't get me wrong, he couldn't stand McNamara, Westmoreland, and Johnson..... add the sorry assed John McCain to the list, but he was as straight as an arrow could be, would have been "Air Attache" to the Ambassador of Chile! put predicted the revolution and retired to the farm, got sick of all the SHIT!

but there are Good people in the the US military, honest, hard working straight shooters....this is NO cover up, this is real life in the flying business Bub, no shit, happens every day somewhere, why don't you do a little research and find out just how many "smoking black holes" there have been due to "loss of spatial orientation", the FAA, more particularly the NTSB have reams and reams of that "stuff"!

Spatial disorientation is an issue that is ever present especially with naval aviation. Brat understands this much better than any of us.

An article associated with this issue.

Outstanding source Mr. Brumby, outstanding, Mr. Jura I pray you would do us the courtesy of educating your-self with this very informative little missive! no-one on SDF has any excuse for not understanding the dangers of night flying overwater, while this is a Naval Aviator education, it applies to all aviator's, particularly those flying over water at night...

As I stated earlier, maneuvering, HMS, and extremely high rate of decent are all causative factors, if he wasn't turning when he pushed over, he was likely pulling a negative G or two... possible "red-out".... he was pumped to have taken out "two" "bad boys", that figures in as well....

Lockheed, Pentagon reach handshake agreement on next F-35 lot, paving the way for an $80M jet next year

Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Department of Defense have

on the next lot of F-35 joint strike fighters, an agreement that for the first time

to purchase additional aircraft over the next few years.

In a statement, Pentagon acquisition head Ellen Lord called the agreement, worth $34 billion over lots 12, 13 and 14 for 478 aircraft, a “historic milestone.”

The agreement includes 157 jets in lot 12, and comes with an estimated 8.8 percent Unit Recurring Flyaway cost savings from the previous lot. While the Pentagon did not provide costs per aircraft in its news release, that would amount to about $81 million per F-35A conventional takeoff and landing model compared to $89.2 million for an F-35A in lot 11.

Lord estimated that the cost will drop around 15 percent from lot 11 to lot 14 across all variants, which could peg an A model at around $76 million.

“This framework estimates the delivery of an F-35A for less than $80M in Lot 13, one year earlier than planned," Lord said. "This agreement symbolizes my commitment to aggressively reduce F-35 cost, incentivize Industry to meet required performance, and to deliver the greatest capabilities to our warfighters at the best value to our taxpayers.”

The price of the F-35B short takeoff and landing variant and F-35C carrier variant also dropped in lot 12, said Greg Ulmer, Lockheed Martin’s F-35 head.

“With smart acquisition strategies, strong government-industry partnership and a relentless focus on cost reduction, the F-35 enterprise has successfully reduced procurement costs of the 5th generation F-35 to equal or less than 4th generation legacy aircraft,” he said in a statement. “The handshake agreement, once finalized, will represent the largest F-35 production contract and the lowest aircraft prices in program history.”

News of the deal was first reported by Reuters.

discouraged by the cartoons in the moment I saw them inside

NO EXCUSES MR JURA!, if you level an accusation of a cover up, the very least you should do prior to making completely unfounded accusations is to familiarize yourself with the circumstances surrounding the incident....

Now, here we have the F-35A customer making an educated assessment and coming to the most logical conclusion possible... with each of the factors given, night, heavy maneuvering, very, very high rate of decent! what other possible conclusion could a logical man or woman reach???

So if the Japanese were disputing the claim of spatial disorientation, then you might level an accusation?? but the customer is stating that their operator and aircraft perished due to likely spatial disorientation

Feel free to overlook the cartoon illustrations and read the very outstanding and informative text, in the mean time I would suggest you withdraw your baseless accusation unless you are able to find some evidence of a cover-up....

As I've observed several times, your formative years as a member of the USSR has created a great deal of distrust, to the point of paranoia??

For starters Mr. Hosomi was in a left bank, so likely pulling a few G's as well, please do read the excellent informative as to causative factors to "spatial disorientation"!

They should add autopilot safety features to these planes. In case the pilot passes out or gets disoriented the plane can stabilize and fly itself back to base or something. Or allow remote control.
