The purposefulness of the One China policy has outlived its use. China is now a competitor against the US in all fields, what point is there for the US to continue to follow the One China policy when the US has decided that there is no use to even maintain a good relationship with China? Clearly the aim right now is to decouple the economies, contain China politically and push for formal Taiwanese independence as a way to distract and fumble China's development.

I think ultimately the goal of the US hawks is to use Taiwan as human sacrifice to destroy China's development. They know if they can draw China into a war over Taiwan, this will stall and destroy China's momentum as well as lead to significant global outcry against China and no certain chance of Chinese victory over Taiwan either.

The question now is, will Taiwan be dumb enough to understand the trap that is being set and be willing to allow their livelihoods be endangered and destroyed for the chance to simply formally declare independence?

One China policy was never just an appeasement policy towards China. Because One China policy itself has a lot of ambiguity. This one China could be both ways, since the US has never formally reject and institutionally prevent the possibility that ROC could ever "retake mainland". The only reason this does not seem possible is because the PRC has performed extremely well in governing and controlling the mainland, which makes ROC's comeback very unlikely.

The ROC will always remain a potent phantom that will haunt the PRC. Because it is a significant part of contemporary Chinese history. And it is the ultimate asymmetrical weapon the little island of Taiwan has that can offer an offensive capability on a strategic level. Without this specter of a resurgent ROC vowing to re-take mainland, the island of Taiwan will be purely on the defensive posture, without the possibility of staging an effective offense. This would mean that the PRC would have lost the most effective challenge to its own legitimacy in mainland. This will shift the play ground all into Taiwan island. The outcome of this will be a pure arms race between two side with one side outclassing the other in every aspect.

The One China policy was designed to keep the peace.

Currently, keeping the peace doesn't serve US interests especially if they feel that if they don't find some way to significantly disrupt China's development in the next ten years, it will be GAME OVER.

So there is no longer any sense for the US to abide by the One China policy. The goal now is to use Taiwan as a pawn to disrupt China's development. Even in the event that China invades and holds an independent Taiwan, it will be a pyrrhic victory because China will have squandered its development and be castigated across the world.

You made great points except one, ""no certain chance of Chinese victory over Taiwan either. """ Once China fired first gun powder, we surrender. Do you think we want to fight China? Are we dumb enough? Our army becomes a recreation group, OK, maybe 10 thousands elite fighting force, but with that, we are not going to fight against China. We are not going to sacrifice ourself for anybody.

I don't think taking Taiwan is going to be as easy as some of these pro-China hawks think. Taiwan has a very well trained and well armed military and they have the advantage of fighting on the defense. China's navy has vastly improves but it's ability to take Taiwan by force is nowhere guaranteed.

Pretty sure this entire thread is against forum rules.

The original article is just too ludicrous to be given a second thought.

Yeah I have. I've been to both. Taiwan isn't as flashy as Mainland China, but overall when you look at the details, it is tidier and the people are kinder and more courteous and not as aggressive and selfish.

Also, I've said nothing wrong. Taiwan has a very well equipped and well trained army. It will definitely be able to put up a strong fight. There is no guarantee that China can take it by force.
