What is that rust on the side?

That is surface corrosion. Very normal & easily treated. Sea air and sea water is highly corrosive. USS John C Stennis deployed from Bremerton WA in Puget Sound on 22 October 2018. That's seven months..most of the time was spent at sea.

An aircraft carrier is in Alaska for Exercise Northern Edge for the first time in a decade, as the service continues to prioritize re-learning how to operate in the Arctic.

Northern Edge 2019 is a high-end joint exercise hosted by U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and focused on air warfare that runs May 13 through 24. About 10,000 personnel are participating, about half of which come from the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group currently operating in the Gulf of Alaska. Strike group assets include Carrier Strike Group 9 leadership, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), Carrier Air Wing 11, USS Russell (DDG-59), USS Kidd (DDG-100), USS John Finn (DDG-113) and USNS Henry J. Kaiser (T-AO-187).

Rear Adm. Dan Dwyer, who commands the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group, told USNI News in a phone call from aboard the carrier that “this is one of the premier exercises for the INDO-PACIFIC commanders. … Northern Edge is designed to sharpen all of our skills, tactical combat operating skills; improve our ability to command and control forces, establish those command relationships; develop our communication networks; with an overall goal of increasing interoperability within the joint force, particularly in the INDO-PACOM region.”

He said the exercise covers command and control over both land and maritime domains, and so “all participants, whether it’s the air wing or the destroyers, are integral to that mission set and each all plug into the higher command and control piece” to share information and work together under a single joint force commander.
I'm interested in what he says next

(because I would've thought the Commander of the CSG should've been automatically in charge of the DESRON, the CVN etc., so I was curious about "command and control over both land and maritime domains"),

Dwyer said his crew was excited to begin the joint event, which would pair the carrier air wing’s F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, EA-18G Growlers and E-2 Hawkeyes with ground-based Navy P-8A Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft, Marine Corps F-35B Joint Strike Fighters and KC-130 cargo and refueling aircraft, and Air Force jets such as the F-22 and F-15. Any time that many types of aircraft come together to work in a range of mission areas “is incredibly valuable, especially as we talk about exercising at the highest potential of a joint force. So to come together with all those platforms will increase our readiness and our lethality across the board.”

This opportunity is especially valuable to the Navy as it seeks to relearn old lessons about operating in the high latitudes.

Dwyer said he couldn’t speak to the Truman CSG experience, but he said the Navy has operated in the Alaskan Gulf area for 30 years and had many after-action reports for the strike group team to pore over ahead of the exercise.

“As Navy Secretary Richard Spencer told Congress recently, the Navy is deepening our commitment to Arctic security and operations in Alaska,” the admiral said.
“The Alaskan (operating area) is critical to the INDO-PACOM region. The expansive training areas offered here in Alaska provide us with an excellent environment to fully engage and conduct integrated, large-scale joint training exercises unmatched anywhere else in the United States, I must say. The Arctic ice cap is as small as we’ve seen in our lifetime, and this gives rise to increasing trade routes and sea lanes that are open more times of the year, so it’s incredibly important that we as an Arctic nation continue to operate in this area to protect this vital area to our national defense.”

Air Force Brig. Gen. Daniel Heires, deputy commander of Alaskan Command, part of U.S. Northern Command, also foot stomped during a press conference the importance of the Arctic location and the need for high-end joint exercises in INDO-PACOM.

“I think we all watch the news and realize for the first time in forty years the global order is being challenged by a very serious, very serious threat,” he said.
“And there’s an old adage: the more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in wartime. And to translate that directly, the more we’re ready as a joint force, ready to respond to a crisis, the less likely our resolve will be tested.”

Heires said he believed the high-end exercise, which challenges the joint force to come together in an austere environment and face a complex threat, “will translate to our adversaries knowing that we’re ready to respond to a crisis.”
OK sounds to me like the CSG supported by the Poseidons and covered by the USAF fighters, impressive

..and also USAF tankers. P-3s & P-8s have supported CSG for a long time. Even back when CSG had S-3A Vikings aboard.

as I went thought the pictures it looks like rust washed out from the rain drainage.

Nope, just seawater and high moisture and heat, cause oxidation, and yes it will pop paint, or even surface coatings on aircraft in a very short while...

If you want a real education ck out some U-tube videos on "salt water baths" to test new handguns etc for service.. but you are right, it washes over the deck and comes "down the drain", so it is streaky!

aye Cap'n!, I know more about corrosion than I ever wanted to, here in Central Obamastan, we fight corrosion every day.... sadly, once a piece of steel starts to corrode and pit, its a WAR to keep it at bay.... I bet you have some pictures of "sailors over the side" attempting the impossible? don't you??

More beautiful old muscle cars have died because of corrosion than could be imagined..

even aircraft aluminum corrodes like crazy, heat and moisture are killers, add SALT, you wouldn't believe what happens overnight!

Knowing all that, makes what the Chinese accomplished bringing the poor old Varyag back to life as CV-16 even more amazing, absolutely amazing, but a lot of serious "grunt work", manual labor!

French Navy aircraft carrier FS Charles de Gaulle (R 91) met up with ships from the navies of the US, Australia and Japan for a series of maneuvers in the Bay of Bengal.

The exercise involving US destroyer USS William P. Lawrence (DDG 110), Australian Navy frigate HMAS Toowoomba (FFH 156) and submarine HMAS Collins (SSG 73), Japan Maritime Self Defense Force helicopter-destroyer JS Izumo (DDH 183) and destroyer JS Murasame (DD 101) kicked off on May 16.

La Perouse, as the exercise is referred to, is named after the 18th century French naval officer and explorer.

– involved the participation of Indian Navy aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.

“La Perouse is an opportunity to develop strong links, work habits and mutual knowledge essential for best practices between our navies operating in the same regions of interest,” said Rear Adm. Olivier Lebas, commanding officer, French Carrier Strike Group.

“These exercises reflect our common involvement in maritime security in the Indian Ocean and Asia-Pacific area.”

During the drills, the ships practiced formation sailing, live fires, communications, search and rescue, damage control, and personnel transfers.

“The Japan-France-Australia-US multilateral exercise is a great experience. I am looking forward to working with high-end navies together and will improve tactical skills and partnerships,” said Rear Adm. Hiroshi Egawa, commander, Escort Flotilla 1. “I believe this exercise will contribute to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.”

These events follow the combined anti-submarine warfare exercise that concluded May 14, which included the Virginia-class submarine USS Hawaii (SSN 776) which joined forces with Charles de Gaulle (R 91), F70AA-class air defense destroyer FS Forbin (D 620), Durance-class tanker FS Marne (A 630), F-70 type anti-submarine vessels FS Latouche-Treville (D 646) and FS Provence (D 652) in the Indian Ocean.

The exercise, comprised of multiple anti-submarine warfare (ASW) drills, was designed to enhance unit-level training, improve the strike group’s ability to respond to a submarine threat, and enhance interoperability between the U.S. and French navies.

“My crew and I enjoyed the opportunity to tactically employ Hawaii with the Charles de Gaulle Strike Group in the Indian Ocean. The exercise allowed my team to test itself against their highly proficient crews manning capable modern surface warships and helicopters. We sharpened our warfighting skills and strengthened our joint partnerships in the Indo-Pacific AOR,” said Cmdr. Sterling S. Jordan, commanding officer, USS Hawaii. “I’m proud of Hawaii and the dedication of the crew day in and day out.”

The captain of the largest and most powerful ship ever built for the Royal Navy has been sacked for misusing its official car, it has been reported.

Nick Cooke-Priest is no longer in charge of the HMS Queen Elizabeth because he is believed to have driven the aircraft carrier's official car on weekends, according to The Sun.

A Royal Navy spokesman said: "We can confirm Captain Nick Cooke-Priest has been reassigned to a new role. We can only say that management action is ongoing and it would therefore be inappropriate to comment further."

Commodore Cooke-Priest, who joined the Royal Navy in 1990, had only been in command of the 280-metre, 65,000-tonne vessel, described by the Royal Navy as an "awe-inspiring warship" capable of carrying up to 40 aircraft, since last October.

He was never warned that using the Ford Galaxy for personal journeys was in breach of rules, the paper reports.

A former officer told The Sun: "Nick adores the Navy and has lost his career by doing what captains have done for decades - using the company car to get home. An innocent mistake has cost the Navy one of its best."

It is believed that major Royal Navy warships and their captains are loaned a car for use on official duties. An investigation found he had used the Ford as if it was his own, and found him guilty of an "error of judgment", according to The Sun.
