Now this is interesting - why would a Chinese airline name itself after a historical figure who was responsible for invading medieval China and killing a massive portion of population?

Can someone shed light on how Genghis Khan is perceived in China nowadays?

Not strange at all. Genghis Khan is considered a legendary historical figure in contemporary Chinese culture. You don’t see the Greeks or the Egyptians or the Persians hating on Alexander the Great just because he conquered them thousands of years ago.

Not negatively. He is famed and respected for his military prowess, ambition, and humble origins. While he killed and pillaged in China, he also integrated his culture and blood into China and is very much a part of the Chinese identity today, although certainly, his legacy is a minor partner at best. Chinese view his conquest of China as quite ironic, likening it to a wolf coming to eat sheep but ending up dead from overeating. To despise him is to deny our full Chinese heritage.

Well, especially if you’re Northern Chinese.

He died in 1227. For all intents and purposes, he didn't have a chance to kill this many Chinese in his life.
Han-majority jurchen-ruled Jin(金) was humbled during his rule, sure, as was han-minority western xia(西夏)but it isn't enough for your numbers.

Nonetheless, his current image in China is...mixed.

There were not 100 million Chinese total during that time lol

Genghis never defeated China in his lifetime. During that time period, modern China was split in northern, southern song, western Xia and more. Northern song was largely integrated with not much bloodshed, southern song fought several bloody wars with Genghis’ successor Kublai, but it never reached the levels of bloodshed in Central Asia/east Europe.

Genghis birthplace also falls within China’s territory, and his historical base of operations lies even further in, being close to modern day Beijing.

Alexander the Great is a pretty apt comparison to him

Comac will open a second assembly line for its ARJ21 regional jet this year, as it prepares to ramp up production of the type.

The Chinese manufacturer is targeting to produce 22 regional jets to customers this year, up from 15 in 2018, Wang Xingwei, director of the ARJ21 programme office tells FlightGlobal. In 2017, it built six aircraft.

This year, besides launch customer Chengdu Airlines, it will also deliver the regional jet to two more customers - Genghis Khan Airlines and Urumqi Airlines.

The new assembly line will be located at the Comac final assembly centre near Shanghai’s Pudong International airport. This is also where assembly of its in-development C919 narrowbody is ongoing, and where assembly of the Sino-Russian CRAIC CR929 widebody will take place.

The ARJ21 regional jet is currently assembled at the Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing facility in Changzhong Road.

Yuan Wenfang, general manager of production and operations support, says that the Changzhong facility can only accommodate six aircraft at any one point due to its limited space, and has an annual maximum capacity of producing 15 jets.

The new assembly line at the Pudong facility will have the capacity to assemble 30 aircraft a year. The manufacturer is also prepared to open a second line there should there be a requirement to further raise production rates.

Comac is targeting to deliver 30 ARJ21s next year, and for delivery to stabilise at that level annually thereafter.

The manufacturer has so far garnered 528 commitments for the type from 24 customers.
